#TimHodgkinson and the #HyperionInternationalEnsemble - "chorismos" (2017)
"Chorismos began from thinking about #whitenoise, and whether it might be possible to transition from white noise, as a kind of all-embracing totality, to something we might recognise as music, with a network of relationships between distinct audible events."
#TheOphelias - "Mr. Rabbit" (live June 7, 1987 at the Haight Street Fair, San Francisco)
I posted the studio version of this for #MondayCovers, but it's wild to see em do it live too - I did not realise singer Leslie Medford played recorder, harmonica, AND trumpet. On a personal note, my beautiful wife graduated high school and moved up to this bit of SF around this time, so it's totally possible she's down there someplace picking her way through that tight knot of late 80s Bay Area street humanity.

We Are The Shaggs (2026)
A new documentary by #KenKwapis tells the extraordinary story of Dorothy "Dot" Wiggin (vocals, lead guitar), Betty Wiggin (vocals, rhythm guitar), Helen Wiggin (drums) and later Rachel Wiggin (bass guitar) aka #TheShaggs, the unlikely musical pioneers whose 1969 album Philosophy of the World went from obscurity to cult classic.
"Our grandmother would read palms. She told our father he was going to have three girls, and they were going to be in a band. He made sure that happened."

To the burning of the Stock Exchange and bombing of the press /

#TheOphelias - "Mr. Rabbit" (1985)
First waxing by SF's psychedelically-enthused Ophelias was an old traditional song that #BurlIves had re-introduced to America's children not long after WWII ended. I have long been in awe of the manic freakishness singer Leslie Medford brought to the proceedings, and could totally imagine these guys sharing a bill with #CamperVanBeethoven back then. Indeed, CVB would later pinch the Oafs' lead guitarist #DavidImmerglück for their own.

#SavageRepublic - "Viva La Rock 'n' Roll" (1988)
A suitably monochromatic cover of the greatest Deptford UK punk band of all time, #AlternativeTV. #BradLaner’s #JakiLiebezeit-inspired grooves were the saving grace of the 1988 SR gig I attended, helping push the band to sometimes attain circular, #CAN-like levitation.
Anyone shortlist one of my all-time favourite pop songs?
#Squeeze - "Up The Junction" (1979)
No need for verse/chorus/verse when you're riding a piano-driven melody this wonderful and singing lyrics this bittersweet. And just out the gate: that why-didn't-I-think-of-it drum break! It grabs my attention every spin.

#WarrenBurt - "A Post-Modern Object-Oriented Chaotic Cellular Microtonal Teledildonic Virtual Simulacra! (Buzzwords [that might have gotten you tenure] for sampled orchestra) (1991) for computer-controlled synthesizer" (reissued 2026)
"This release features music from the final sections of a near-six-hour epic cycle of interactive computer and synthesizer pieces from 1990-91, investigating the magical intermediate space between the human and the mechanical. Dedicated to #KennethGaburo, the music draws on wide-ranging inspirations including #SunRa and #ElliottCarter, #QuincyJones’ “Setembro” and #CharlesIves, #PortsmouthSinfonia and ancient Greek modes."

Speaking of #EmmanuelCortes, here he is singing his hit "Amor" + 2 more, live and endearingly-flat, from someone's driveway. Not only is the #accordion player ace, but that young bassist, Mexican 12-string guitarist, and drummer add much to the groove.

#RubenAndTheJets - "Show Me the Way to Your Heart" (1973)
Well known #Zappa spin-off from LA's eastside who loved oldie falsettos as much as their audiences did. Never a big Zappa fan myself, I didn't actually listen to this record until I found out the lead singer was the dad of an old female friend of mine. If you hang out with her enough, she'll tell you crazy stories of Frank + weirdo entourage coming over to her house to play music when she was just a little kid.

#RichardLockwood - "Dawn Song of the Great Seven Hundred Years World Peace" (1993, released 2012)
Richard Lockwood (1943 - 2012) was singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist in the amazing 60s Australian psych/prog band #Tully. "Dawn Song" was one of the many devotional pieces he wrote inspired by the spiritual teachings of #AvatarMeherBaba. I was briefly in touch with Richard via email in the early 2000s; I remember telling him how much I loved this one.

This Bay Area mid-70s #FlaminGroovies-spinoff band were either the last gasp of the original, folk-infused psychedelic #SanFranciscoSound, or upstart pre-punk #PowerPop originators - take your pick. Led by singing/songwriting siblings Michael and Debra Houpt, they only ever released 2 7" 45s during their lifetime, Debra's vocals and the Groovie-esque jangle of this one being my favourite.

Here's the #EmmanuelCortés video for his 2024 hit "Amor", still skimming the Latin charts 2 years on
What I like:
- This Arkansas-native wrote it himself in a lilting, near-reggae style he calls "Cumbia Tumbada"
- Can't hide his teen acne & braces even if he wanted to
- Props for casting a natural-looking woman in the video
What I don't like:
- Trite lyrics bear no discussion
- TikTok made him the man he is today
- Has trouble spelling Arkansas in interviews
All things considered, Emmanuel gets my thumbs up
