@therealahall While undoubtedly true, there are probably songs for which the saxophone makes them what they are?
I cannot think of an example right now.
@BonfireAtNight Probably, or at least they’d sound a lot different without it. It’s more a post about how much that instrument bothers me for some reason. I was just rocking out to a song and they dropped in a sax part and it broke the groove for me.
@therealahall I think I know what you mean. I love the "warm" sound, but for some reason it always makes me think of a rainy night, expecting some film noir voiceover.
@BonfireAtNight I'm definitely thinking of that next time I hear it 🤣
@therealahall Oh, I could now think of awesome music featuring a sax to great effect!
It adds a great layer of atmosphere to some moments of Messa (especially on "Close"). And it's an important part of the insane black/power metal thrill-ride that is Sigh.
Of course, it's also a staple of doom-y jazz, like Bohren & Der Club of Gore or Five the Hierophant (though probably very unlike the usage you are on the fence about).
@BonfireAtNight Hmmm, I've not really spent any time listening to any of those bands. I'm going to have to at least check them out although I am curious how much my pre-conceived bias will be in play there.
@therealahall If you only listen to one, I think I speak for everyone (right?) that it should be Bohren & Der Club of Gore. It's somewhat traditional jazz in sloooow motion. It really goes under your skin.
"Black Earth" or "Dolores" are probably good starting points.
@BonfireAtNight Thanks for the recommendations!
@therealahall @BonfireAtNight Rivers of Nihil
@Doubleaa @BonfireAtNight No… do they use sax?
@therealahall
What if there was a coved of Baker Street which didn't use a sax?
@jamie Honestly the underlying track doesn’t sound too bad. Yes it’s obviously missing the melody, but that could conceivably be covered by guitar IMO. Like someone like Joe Satriani. But yes, that is ingrained in the song pretty heavily.
