My kid just asked an interesting question. Are there any Rock or Metal bands out there that do not have drums?
I can't imagine how that would work. I guess Van Canto would qualify as a pure a capella band, but otherwise...
Drum machines as a replacement don't count.
Any ideas?

Seasick Steve!!! Electric guitar and a stomp box. I'll let my kid decide if that counts. 😅

@irgndsondepp Sunn O)))!!! Not everyone's cup of tea but definitely heavy and no discernable beat.

@daniel ummm... Maybe? It's been ages since I listened to them. The a capella gimmick wore itself out pretty quickly for me. 😅

@irgndsondepp Billy Bragg's first few albums come to mind, although he's a singer-songwriter, not really a band. but he does sound like rock n roll without drums.

@f0rrest @irgndsondepp makes me wonder if there are any 50s rock n roll recordings that are just piano and voice

@spnw @f0rrest oh sure. Doesn't Jerry Lee Lewis qualify? My brain somehow didn't go quite that far back, but yeah when we hit the very early Rock 'n' Roll era or take Blues into account, there are tons of candidates.

@irgndsondepp @f0rrest my mind went straight to "Great Balls of Fire" but it has drums. Little Richard had a drummer too. so i dunno!

@spnw I fell for that as well. I put Jerry Lee on in the car and was surprised by the drums. 😅

@irgndsondepp@gts.da-miez.de Electronicore and crunkcore bands (e.g., I See Stars, Brokencyde) don’t always consistently use drums, though it might depend on whether you count certain types of non-drum-machine, electronically generated sounds as “drums” or not.

Ditto for various electronic acts (e.g., Devo, the Bloody Beetroots), though again this might depend on your definition of “rock,” “drums” and/or “consistent.”
