We think, we experience, we exist, and we have beliefs about those things that say that this means x, y, or z. We conclude that other humans can think, experience, and exist because they are like us and we do those things. We call that consciousness and intelligence. Philosophers have argued over how to argue and what we are for ages and I don't need to reinvent that. We do not say a parrot repeating a word understands that word and we do not say a plant following the sun is thinking.

What is the minimum amount of intelligence needed to say a non-human being is capable of thought? Is it completing a puzzle, using a tool, solving math problems? When do other creatures become worthy of having rights of their own? Most people agree that AI is not a conscious thinking being, but then how do we judge the requirements for being one?

What does it mean to be alive, what are feelings, what is thought, what is consciousness, what is actual intelligence, and how do we decide who gets rights and who does not?

@Savagejen It's possible for parrots repeating words to have understanding of the words, though; Irene Pepperberg proved that with the Alex studies.

Personally I believe that consciousness doesn't require significant intelligence. I used to believe in the emergent consciousness theory, but now I'm all about attention schema.
