it seems that some people at the helm are currently pushing a "let's make mastodon more like everything else" kind of thing.
i wrote some thoughts on what's wrong with their approach to ux design under a feedback thread, but perhaps it should be its own thread, or blog post?

Purple :verified:Purple@woof.techOct 26, 2026, 10:18 AM@outfrost Odds are that unless mastodon allows it to be a theme to be selected, it probably will eventually do :(
We already are running some changes on our instance to bring some contrast back that has been lost since v4.4 (the middle panel), so were not too afraid to make changes, but I'm unsure how backport-able the old UI would be
If anyone else makes it as a theme, we'd be able to add it of course
EDIT: Only positive news for you I can give on this is that woof.tech usually lags behind in major releases, as I prefer to offer a stable experience which means we usually don't use .0 and .1 releases etc

@Purple thank you 💚 i really appreciate the effort!
might look into theme stuff eventually, but with the amount of things constantly on my mind, i can't promise anything ;;
