My rating for a novel in which the surprisingly enlightened detective narrates a case in the 70s involving a gay man running a prostitution ring while living with a 15 year old boy who's in love with him. Spenser (the detective) feels almost contemporary to me, but him next to the 70s attitudes of the characters around him is weirdly uncanny valley...

Also, the author gets lost in descriptions.
Hence three cheeses and two warnings.
