A democracy where citizens have to fight to keep their names on voter lists, demand accountability from the Election Commission & struggle to exercise their right to protest is a democracy in trouble.

Ahead of the Oct 10 protest demanding Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation, the BJP govt is deploying 23,000+ security personnel & restricting transport to Delhi.

PM Modi’s fear of dissent is showing. A government confident in its mandate doesn’t need to fear its own people.

Over 100 million voter names were reportedly deleted through SIR, risking the disenfranchisement of eligible voters. An independent electoral institution must not only act impartially but also inspire public confidence in its impartiality.

The right to vote & the right to protest are inseparable.
What good is the right to vote if eligible citizens risk being excluded from electoral rolls?

Electoral integrity demands accountability, something the BJP/ Modi govt is remarkably adept at evading.

We have a Prime Minister who avoids unscripted interviews with journalists, stays conspicuously silent when women protest for their safety but makes selfie videos calling GenZ his 'friends' as he magnanimously forgives them for criticising him?
FYI, none of those kids asked for his forgiveness but got bullied anyway

But apparently, a valid criticism warrants a lecture on civility but citizens demanding accountability warrant a show of force. The priorities are certainly something with PM Modi.

PM Modi is so rattled that Delhi Police are arresting protesters -> ordinary Indian citizens, not criminals. People are being picked up from their homes. Even protesting lawyers are being arrested.

This is what happens when you let fascists govern for a decade: dissent is criminalised, democracy is dismantled & decadence becomes the defining legacy of the regime.

Today is India's reckoning. The BJP cannot win the people’s mandate, unless its pawns keep manipulating the electoral process.

What’s happening in Delhi bears the political stamp of PM Modi & his party. When you elect a leader who, in my view, is indifferent to human suffering & enables religious extremism, you cannot expect a more inclusive or progressive India.

In just a decade, Modi has helped bring together a formidable force of bigots united by one purpose: to ensure this country is governed in their own image, where religious majoritarianism takes precedence over constitutional values.

    The horror, the horror.
