    @alice i strongly support not suspending this bot. it was made by a queer person who reclaims the term fag/faggot and offers the bot as a service to others who feel similarly and enjoy being called that term. it is acting directly on behalf of the users who follow it; the shell script making the posts is not the entity that may or may not be reclaiming the slur, it's the people following the bot.

    i fail to see what harm this bot is actually doing? the only thing i can think of is that it would maybe cause people who don't like seeing that word to come across one of these posts on the public timeline, but i don't think we should be weighing their comfort over the right of queer people to empower ourselves by reclaim slurs that have historically been used against us. if there were bots like this for other slurs that are used against me, i would follow them!!
    ultimately, i think this bot is a positive thing, and anyone who doesn't like seeing it can super easily mute or block the account or set up a filter to hide posts containing the word fag

    it also says that if you take issue with it to reach out to the dev - have you done that?

    suspending this makes absolutely no sense to me

    Also, you didn't even feel the need to ping the bot or the maintainer, just shitting on them in silence. They found you anyway. I myself have chosen not to opt in to this, because I still don't like the f-slur, but that's a CHOICE one is able to make.

    @YKantRachelRead should I have silently suspended it? It seems like most of the community is in favor of suspending the bot. If I didn't do so, I'd be choosing one person's art project (and the 21 followers it had at the time) over everyone else who would have to see slurs in their timeline.

    Mind you, the bot still exists. The owner still runs their own instance. I didn't suspend the owner. All I can do is limit folx on *this* server from seeing it in their timeline—and making choices like that is why I was asked to be an admin here.

    Finally, I have *never* encouraged dogpiling or personal attacks, and I hope I've made it abundantly clear in the hundreds of times I've said it, but anyone who acts like that towards another Fedi user isn't welcome to be one of my followers.

    I understand that people listen to me, and that my words here carry a disproportionate amount of weight. I don't take responsibility that lightly.

    I don't know what you should've done, because I'm not involved in fedi moderation. I'm just here to tell you that using your platform to publicly call out a tiny queer account doing a funny little project isn't the thing that you should've done.

    @alice @YKantRachelRead @vantiss i don't feel like the results of that poll are indicative of much? i think a lot of people likely voted in the poll without getting full context (e.g. not seeing that the bot is a project by a queer person, not understanding what the purpose of the bot is, etc). it's incredibly easy for someone to vote in a poll they see on their timeline without looking into a situation much, especially when the poll and surrounding posts frame it as a clear-cut case of hate speech and it takes quite a bit of scrolling through the thread to find the bot's creator's side of the story.

    i'm also seeing a lot of people in the replies who seem to be against the bot because they're against queer people reclaiming slurs in general. i think that issue is intricately linked with queer liberation and leftist politics, and as such is something that you/your instance should take a stance on as a matter of policy instead of leaving as a valid subject for debate, similarly to how your instance is for trans rights, is anti-oppression, etc. presumably, you wouldn't count poll votes from someone who openly espouses transphobic views, so if you support queer people reclaiming slurs, I think the votes of people who hold opposing views shouldn't matter

    @b @alice @vantiss totally agreed. this was the very definition of a push poll: framing the bot as doing hate speech, leaving out a ton of context (the bot has a tiny following, is opt-in, and run by a queer person), and making the only two options "suspend" and "do nothing."

    alice clearly had what they wanted to do already in mind and created the poll to manufacture consent for it.

    @b @alice great post - and to add, we shouldn't be anthropomorphizing the bot. the bot is maintained by a queer person, so it's a queer person reclaiming a slur leveled at queer people. the bot is a bit of programming that they did. and it's entirely opt-in. there's literally no reason to do a moral panic over this shit.
