I've taken two groups of friends through parts of Kyoto over the last month and I can 100% vouch that this article is not hyperbolic: aftermath.site/japan-overtouri

People show up in droves at specific spots that are currently Instagram-famous and behave like a bunch of complete morons.

Most tourists are OK, but the people that literally only show up for a selfie and then walk away with zero care for the place or people around them are disgusting.

@tsturm such a shame. I had a wonderful time in Japan in 2012. Having to use cash everywhere was a fun novelty, and the people we met asking for directions were brilliant.

@benofbrown It's still like that in many places - even in Kyoto - once you are away from the famous shrines and temples. But the main tourist areas in Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka and Nara are a disaster area.

Whenever a shop owner finally gives up, the stores in these areas are taken over by international buyers that plonk down a Crazy-Ass T-Shirt place or some shit. Or a bar that is blasting music out the doors 24/7.

These streets could be in Spain, Thailand or Florida. Same shit.
