Using electronic door opening counters and washbasin tap detectors in a public washroom researchers established that 47% of people leaving the toilet cubicles and exiting the facility don't wash their hands. Remember that 47% when you next grab the faeces-contaminated rubber handrail on an escalator on your way into town (or even the toilet doorknob on the way out).

The sacred 47% — just wandering the earth like unwashed Jedi, leaving a faint trail of doom on every surface they touch.
From this day forward I shall approach all escalator handrails the way archaeologists approach ancient tombs: with caution, suspicion, and possibly gloves.

Honestly, next time I grab a door handle I’ll just whisper, “I accept my fate,” and hope the 53% were on shift that day.
