There are not enough sci-fi movies that are fundamentally optimistic, and I am so glad we have another. Contact, Arrival, The Martian, and Close Encounters are all very dear to me for this reason, and I am delighted to add to that list. (Interstellar is also good for visuals and music, but not plot)

Villeneuve is off doing great visual work with Dune, that's for sure, but it's not quite my jam. That said, I am so curious what he can do with Rendezvous With Rama - that book was formative for me.

@sharif I had not - once I learned they were doing a movie, and having loved The Martian, I decided to wait for the movie first.

@programmylife He is apparently doing both that and the next Bond movie. So far I feel like he and his teams basically haven't missed, so I am so curious what happens with both of those.

@hollie I am still uncertain if PHM is better - Contact is very special to me - but there's a lot in common in how those movies approach humanity.

@andrew Gosh now I REALLY want to see it. I was going to wait until it came out on streaming but maybe I need to finally visit a theater again.
