Practical SVG is Now Free to Read Online
Back in 2016 I wrote a book called Practical SVG. Recently, the publisher, A Book Apart, closed shop. Now you can Read Practical SVG on the web, here on this site, for free. I always like how Mat's book was online so now mine can join that cool club. I'll echo what I say on the site: Thanks to Jeff Eaton for…

Dang this blew up. I very expected nobody to care.
@chriscoyier So glad it worked well for you! My history of obliquely named joke projects carries on.
@chriscoyier I hadn't heard about A Book Apart closing :-(
@BilliardLentil @chriscoyier same here. that's a danged shame
@chriscoyier An excellent resource.
Are you able to publish an .epub version of it as well, from that site? I'll assume that republishing the original epub isn't a reasonable legal option, but perhaps a new one?
@chriscoyier This is great; thank you!
Is there any chance of getting the epub version, though, for my ereader?
@dgoodmaniii That would be kinda cool but prrrrobbbabbbllllly not. I don't have the time to dedicate to this project. My goal was dumping it off for free to take it off my plate. Thanks for caring though.
@chriscoyier This is super cool! I only learned they closed today, was feeling sad anout missing out on so many books.
Just fyi, I noticed a missing graphic in the sizing and scaling chapter:
@kcarrandale thanks for the heads up, I'll snag that
@chriscoyier Thanks for sharing this nice resource!
Allow me to point out a stray backtick in Chapter 3 at the end of Figure 3.5's caption:
"FIG 3.5: Each of these curved tabs is the same path used over and over again with a different fil`l."
@chriscoyier Great read 👍 Note that the SMIL deprecation is not valid anymore.
@chriscoyier thank you for sharing this resource!
I noticed the chapter menu close button is not working in mobile Safari. Looks like it has focus when tapped, though.
@chriscoyier is there still a way to buy the paperback? I'm putting together a list of all A Book Apart books for folks to find.
@mrtrimble nah not anymore. I intentionally spun that down here.
@chriscoyier your contributions are so much more significant than I think you’ll ever realise ❤️
@benschwarz ❤️
@chriscoyier I even featured it in the latest #11ty Bundle blog post. https://11tybundle.dev/blog/11ty-bundle-53/
@chriscoyier It’s an excellent book and SVG itself hasn’t really changed … so it’s still very relevant.
Plus you still see people using dumb icon fonts. Sigh.
@chriscoyier Bought this when it came out and loved it.
Jul 23, 2024, 7:20 PMthis is real good of you chris
Jul 24, 2024, 2:03 AMSince @abookapart is now closed, I’m trying to track the authors’ preferred ways of making their books available.
https://alandalton.github.io/Authors-Apart/
@Alan @Wilto @abookapart yeah that’s awesome. I’m sure there will be a bunch more in coming months
@Alan @chriscoyier @Wilto @abookapart I got started on this yesterday as well! Maybe we can compare notes!
Jul 24, 2024, 6:34 PM@mrtrimble Sounds good, Ryan! If we both maintain these lists, we’ll give an extra Search Engine Optimisation boost to the authors.
I got the idea for this when I remembered @rachelandrew creating “Future Simple Steps” after Five Simple Steps closed:

Jul 24, 2024, 6:58 PM@mrtrimble Oh, nice: you have a link for @monteiro’s “You’re My Favorite Client”! I’ll add that to my list.
Jul 24, 2024, 7:03 PMJul 25, 2024, 7:48 PM@mrtrimble I see you found a link for “Going Responsive” by @karenmcgrane too — nice work, Ryan! I’ve added that to my list. 📚
Jul 25, 2024, 11:41 PM@mrtrimble I link to Amazon for David Dylan Thomas’s “Design for Cognitive Bias”. That’s because the “This book is available directly from the author” link on the @abookapart webpage links to Amazon.
https://abookapart.com/products/design-for-cognitive-bias
@Alan @abookapart ohhh nice, if he is the seller on Amazon - that'll work!
Dec 6, 2024, 7:04 AM@mrtrimble Hi, Ryan. I see that @abookapart author @ddemaree has created a semi-official directory to help readers to find the authors’ books in their new homes.
It looks great, @ddemaree!
@Alan @abookapart @ddemaree Very nice! Thanks for the update, Alan - I'll update my list and share the site this week in my roundup!
Dec 8, 2024, 6:36 AM@mrtrimble @abookapart @ddemaree 🤦🏻♂️ I forgot to include the URL, Ryan — sorry!
@ddemaree’s site is at https://authors-together.org/
Jul 24, 2024, 6:34 AM@chriscoyier Is there any chance you could replace all shortlinks with their original urls? It's nice to have shortlinks when you have to type them over from a physical book, but for archiving full urls are better. If the shortlink server (bkaprt.com, 5by5.tv, etc) goes down in the future, there is no way to know what pages the links were going to.
Jul 24, 2024, 4:38 PM@chriscoyier Oh, I see now that all the full urls are listed on the References page.
