This is exactly the scenario that @emilymbender and @alex have warned us about in their excellent book "The AI Con" (https://thecon.ai).

The book contains several examples where using stochastic parrots to "make" decisions has severely backfired.

Imho this book should be mandatory reading for anyone holding a public office.

I have finished the book last night, and I can only give a full recommendation.

I am halfway through "The #AI Con" by Emily M. Bender and Alex Hanna.

Full recommendation.

Saying that the examples of inappropriate #LLM use given in chapter four are frightening would be a severe understatement.

Some #books are important. This is one of them.

We just had 3 devs debugging a crash for half a day...

In the end we didn't really figure out what caused it, but renaming a struct seems to have fixed it.

So, my best guess is that there was a symbol collision - but how that's possible with neither compiler nor linker complaining, I don't know?

In 2015 it was still possible to pay in Bitcoins for pizza delivery, so I spent all my coins on pizza, except for some spare change.

I now realized that the "value" of Bitcoin has increased to the point that selling the spare change from 2015 is worth the effort.

This brought me back to look at the state of the Blockchain, and I am sorry to say this, but I was right 10 years ago:

Bitcoin has meanwhile become unusable as a means of payment.

Ten years ago I was playing around with #Bitcoin, to see what all the fuzz was about.

Quickly it became clear to me that Bitcoin is techically unfit for its intended purpose as a means of payment, and can only serve the purpose of an investment bubble.

The reasons are multiple, but my main concern was that Bitcoin is not fine-grained enough to allow wide-spread adoption as a means of payment, as that would inevitably drive the value of 1 Satoshi over the value of everyday commodities.

I am very happy that #Gentoo has added a "jumbo-build" USE flag to Firefox. Without disabling this flag I probably could not build Firefox on my #MNTReform laptop, which is currently still powered by a #BananaPi CM4 SoM with merely 4 GiB of RAM.

After reading Cory Doctorow's blog post about it (https://mamot.fr/@pluralistic/112213164548795444) I have now started a trial on https://kagi.com and I absolutely love it.

The minimum feature set one would expect from any search engine, that has not been working reliably on the market leader for quite some time now?
Officially supported and documented on Kagi.
The search results are also surprisingly clean of clickbait ad-farm pages.

I am going to subscribe to Kagi right now.

However, the wording of the warning in portage does imho not really express how important it is:

ERROR: pretend
This system appears to be booted with the 'hybrid' cgroup layout.
This layout obsolete and is disabled in systemd.

I would not have guessed that this means the system will become unbootable.

Yesterday was one of the very few times I managed to lock myself out of my #Gentoo system.

This time I didn't understand the severity of a warning after a systemd update.

With an older #SailfishOS SDK I had to set systemd.unified_cgroup_hierarchy=false on the kernel command-line to get the build docker image working. The updated systemd no longer supports this, and refused to launch...

Good that I have a #SystemRescue CD for such situations... IT took less than 15 minutes to fix it.

Technically C++ has similar challenges (templates, header-only-libraries,...), but Rust has Cargo and Crates.io, what makes adding dependencies way easier and therefore inflates the problem.

I don't have a solution, and I don't think a technical solution is possible. The best idea I have is to be disciplined when adding dependencies, and to allow an as-broad-as-possible version range.
