@marcoarment @caseyliss when you guys talk about the "Jams app," I'm always curious if you've used Relisten (for Phish, Goose, DMB, etc). It's free. Developed by reputable people who have worked alongside us at @phishnet https://apps.apple.com/us/app/relisten-all-live-music/id715886886
I’ve been a Linux user for ~27 years now. I started in ~1999 with Red Hat 7 (not RHEL, RHL) and it was my *full time* desktop OS for 2+ years with Mandrake Linux around 2003. I’ve tried dozens of distros, I know my way around. Eventually I moved to macOS and I’ve been here ever since. I’ve used Linux consistently since then, but mostly just on servers, no desktop, no GUI - Debian-based the whole time. I’ve run Ubuntu in some form since literally 4.04.
Here’s my question: I just picked up a refurb laptop to run desktop Linux again. I considered:
Ubuntu, Mint, KDE Neon, Omarchy, Pop_OS, Elementary, Fedora Silverblue
But I def want Wayland, a solid package manager, and a good library of available software. Not married to flatpack, deb, or snap.
But I think I’m going to go with plain ol Fedora Workstation. I love Ubuntu and apt, but think Fedora just looks awesome and it’s Wayland first. Thoughts?
This month's @atpfm member special, School: Then and Now, is probably the best ATP episode in the last two years. Really good insights and stuff that truly made my reflect on my kids' experiences. Highly recommend.
Well, since @panic isn't responding to support emails, and doesn't respond on their dev board, and doesn't respond to Reddit posts, and doesn't update their first-class, amazing editor Nova, I guess it's time I recognize that I need to move on. Such a shame, Nova is just a beautiful app. I plan use Cursor for coding, but I need a recommendation for a replacement Mac native SFTP client. Forklift seems pretty great. Anyone have any thoughts?
Hey @panic what's the expected turn around on support via email? I'm running about a *month* between email and response. Is that the service level you're aiming for? I'm a very longtime user (20+years), but starting to think I need to find a new solution, as I'm not getting the guidance I need.
@siracusa For Hyperspace pricing, why not a one time unlock and then, add you as features, make those future unlocks additional one time purchases? That way you can add features but also regenerate revenue.
Hello from Croissant - an app that lets you to post to multiple accounts at the same time!
Amazing
@atpfm has there ever been any thought about a private Slack or Discord for members? Seems like discussion with like minded people who want to discuss the show would be tempting. (fwiw - I'm a day one subscriber)
Warning: homicide
@atpfm @siracusa I know everyone seems to love Slack, but I think the design is worse than it used to be, it's hard to switch orgs, and most people forego threads in favor of a firehouse. Teams is far from great, but I'm not convinced that all business users would be lining up to switch to a SFDC product for large team communication. I could be wrong, but at least a handful of diverse friends agree.
@atpfm Hey @siracusa, honest question - when's the last time you used MS Teams? I'm a Mac user since Panther, not even close to a MS fan, but after listening to your crushing review of Teams, my anecdotal data is that lots of Teams users I know across a handful of companies really like it now. Slack is not very good at threads, not to mention it's from Salesforce - so it’s trading paying one giant for another. I run Slack all day and find Teams far easier for actual professional team chat.
SOTD: 20 Feb 2024: "Bury Me” by The Smashing Pumpkins - The Pumpkins are part of an elite group who have two perfect albums - Gish and Siamese Dream. While Rhinoceros is the song most remembered - for the right reasons - it's actually packed with killer tunes, a masterful debut. Bury Me is high-energy call-and-response, the track 4 to Rhino's track 3, coasting into some slower songs before blasting back with Side B's Tristessa. Def worth a re-listen. #SongOfTheDay https://apple.co/3w4IIdL
SOTD: 19 Feb 2024: "Commissioning a Symphony in C" by CAKE - For a few years in the early aughts, I was super into CAKE. Sadly, their star didn't continue to shine as bright, but it should have, they really had many styles of songwriting. The Comfort Eagle LP is filled with great songs - Opera Singer, Meanwhile Rick James, Love You Madly, and one of their biggest hits, Short Skirt/Long Jacket. Like them, this thumping bass tune is still a banger. #SongOfTheDay https://apple.co/3w4IIdL
SOTD: 18 Feb 2024: "Bleed the Freak” by Alice in Chains - Listen, I could choose any of about 20 AiC songs. Dirt, Sap, Jar of Flies - all sensational, but their debut, Facelift, is pretty awesome. I was lucky to see them live in 1991, at the time I was obsessed with Man in the Box and this song, Bleed the Freak, which is classic AiC - a slow, building verse with those eerie Layne and Jerry harmonies, followed by a rockin' power chorus. Check it out.

SOTD: 17 Feb 2024: "Tin Cans & Twine” by Tortoise - I heard this song in a restaurant one time and Shazam'd it. I really dig the song, it's great background music. Tortoise, Wikipedia says, incorporates krautrock, dub, minimal music, electronica and jazz into their music, a combination sometimes termed "post-rock". They're been consistently credited for the rise of the post-rock movement in the 1990s.

SOTD: 16 Feb 2024: "Machine Messiah” by Yes - Another 1980 prog epic, this almost heavy metal Yes tune is notable for featuring Trevor Horn, of the Buggles (!), on bass and vocals. "Machine Messiah,” Horn said, was written in one day. Although Drama didn't chart well and isn't considered one of Yes' best, Machine Messiah appeared live starting in 2008, and in 2016, Yes performed Drama in its entirety. Machine Messiah still stands out in their vast catalog.

SOTD: 15 Feb 2024: "Best” by Theo Katzman - Katzman, of Vulfpeck, played a bring-down-the-house show at Brooklyn Steel in Feb 2020. The whole show is on YouTube (https://youtu.be/HSBJ-9ZScUg) and every second is killer. That show led me to his beautiful "Modern Johnny Sings" album and made me an instant fan. The song "Best" is so witty in its writing, lamenting the closing of a breakup letter, set atop of a pleasant pop song. Def check out TK and this record.

SOTD: 14 Feb 2024: "Can’t Stand Still” by Mike Gordon - Let's agree: Mike has written some weird stuff. Even the most devoted Phish fan might struggle with more bass-forward melodies, odd times, strange vocal patterns, and confounding lyrics. There are some gems in the catalog though - The Beltless Buckler to The Void to Another Door to Pretend - that showcase brilliant songwriting, clever lyrical turns, and top tier musicianship. This one is easy to love.

SOTD: 13 Feb 2024: "Rats” by Pearl Jam - When Pearl Jam's much anticipated second album, “Vs.”, was released, it was everywhere. The radio played nearly every song regularly. Over time, many of the singles have faded from the short memory of pop history, but Vs. is a near-perfect album. Almost any song could be on this list - Animal, Go, Leash, Indifference, Daughter, Glorified G, rearviewmirror - but here's a fun deep cut from the backside of the LP.
