NASA and Mamdani are proving that Americans are desperate to see their money spent in ways they feel good about.

This, however, is not the same thing as simply spending the money on things we would feel good about but never know happened. People need to be able to see it.

When I was 8-9 I went through a kite flying phase.
I learned about stacking multiple kites about 50 feet apart, and really wanted to see how high I could fly a kite train.

Then I got a very generous ($20) tip from one of my lawnmowing customers. I went down to the hobby shop and bought a full case of kite string.

In a small town everyone knows who did what.
My mom got a call from ATC at the local airport.
I got to meet an FAA employee.
He was stern, but encouraging.

Project Hail Mary was actually so good. I read the book back in 2022 as a college freshman who was fresh out of highschool.

I had faced kind of a lot of challenges with schooling and grades, but I knew that I was an inherently curious person, and that book was incredibly significant to me at a time when I felt very insecure about my intelligence (largely because I went to community college instead of Uni). Not that that was a direct theme in the book, but the fact that I could stay engaged with the content seemed to prove a capability in myself, I guess.

The movie was really awesome, too. It didn't include as much of the introspection and the scientific curiosity as the book, but that's okay. I highly recommend for any scientific- or engineering-minded folks who liked the movie to also go read the book -- Andy Weir's writing is so excellent.

I think somebody should take all the leaked and copyrighted code that exists out there for various LLM Coding Agents, and train a model with a special focus on reproducing that type of code. Then they ask the model to build them something like Claude Code but works with local models or whatever.

I want to watch Anthropic have to argue in a court of law that LLMs reproducing stolen code which they remembered in their weights is a copyright violation of the original authors of that stolen code. I want to see them have to argue that, or else have to admit that anyone is allowed to steal their code.

Hell, twist the knife in the wound by asking it to build a "clean-room re-write" of Claude Code.

I want to see this happen, despite the fact I probably would not even use this vibe coded software almost ever. I want to see Anthropic have to pivot to handle this.

You're using the wrong messaging. Your ability to bypass age verification is going to be exactly the same as your ability to bypass DRM software -- that is to say, incredibly easy from a technical level, but functionally impossible when you are placed into a society where the laws of the land mean that your access to *tools* and *information* on doing such a thing are heavily restricted.

You're doing bad messaging when you act like we're going to just nerd our ways out of this.

If age verification is actually passed as the law of the land, they're not going to stop with the first most sloppy implementation of it. Once a loophole has been discovered it's going to get patched.

Hacker types might be able to circumvent the simple version of Age Verification, but as the AI-bros say, "this is the worst version of this technology that is ever going to exist". What are we going to do when Age Verification gets tied to DRM software or Secure Enclave attestation stuff?

What do we do when it's a crime to host any of the software required to circumvent these -- leading to all the mirrors not hosting the software, so it's not available from Linux official repos?

Don't act like it's going to be easy to circumvent -- they're going to make sure to it that it won't be.

From what I understand this is an actual verification bill—not just self declaration like the California law. We really need to hope this is amended or defeated. This is the one to actually worry about

i feel bad constantly fixating on the informational capitalists while there is so much material harm being done in the world, and then simultaneously remind myself that this is literally capitalism's gamble to finally and fully enclose not only the material world but also our minds. If informational reality comes to be owned by 4 megacorporations, then it's all fascism forever baby.

Read a 29 page paper¹ earlier today, and it's only just dawning on me how long that paper was. Like I often struggle to get through more than about 10 pages of academic prose, but this one I hardly noticed.

I'm pretty proud of myself. And this was after a whole Wikipedia spelunking session. I had been wondering what I wanna do with my week of spring break, and tbh I think reading and working on projects and ideas that I don't have time for during school is gonna be my choice.

I have a confession: the search just broke my radar. I thought I found a killer new Power Metal band called Saint Reaper. The album sounded incredible, and I was about to recommend it right here.

Then I dug into the background. The "band" is totally fake.

I only realized it was AI when I traced it back to a YouTube network called "Hard & Melodic Music Records" that pumps out fully polished albums for multiple fake bands every few weeks. They even fabricated fake human names for the band members to bypass Bandcamp’s human only rules.

It is absolutely heartbreaking that finding indie music now requires forensic accounting to avoid algorithmic content farms. The deception is deliberate.
