Oh wow, #javascript's Array type has nice stuff like flatMap, reduce etc., but no method to pre/append an element and return a new array (or even the same one)?

I've been writing pseudo #haskell "hell"[1] shell scripts for a while now. The ability to easily add command-line options and the simplicity of the language is refreshing. And almost everything is better than bash.

Error messages are abysmal, and a bigger stdlib would be great, but nowhere does it say it's complete or ready yet, sothat's fine.

Cold take: Don't virtue signal your programming language. "'xy' is a 'z' replacement in Rust" adds nothing. Better write more about what it does and what goals you have.

With libraries, different story of course, language matters here.

Hats off to the #emacs people for this little nudge to #vim users from the emacs 31 changelog:

New user option 'browse-url-transform-alist'. This user option is an alist that allows transforming URLs before asking a web browser to load them. For example, it could be used like this:

(add-to-list 'browse-url-transform-alist
'("vim\\.org/.*" . "gnu.org/software/emacs/"))

My #nixos moment of the day: patched my compositor (cosmic) to disable animations. Didn't need to know anything about how to compile or install this thing, didn't need to know which version it is, and if I don't want it anymore, I just comment it out of my .nix file. Try that with any other distro.

Project for this weekend: move all GitHub repositories to #Codeberg and add a "it has moved" commit to them on GitHub. Hope somebody else did the heavy lifting for this.

#openstreetmaps + #fediverse for a Google Maps reviews alternative when?

None of the #haskell regular expression libraries supports named captures? Is the feature that niche?

Why do programmers hate unit suffixes so much? "timeout = 1" is, unfortunately, a classic (seconds? milliseconds? microseconds? minutes?).

Now I see "diskSize = 1024 * 20" in the #nix package for #singularity. Jesus! Make it "diskSizeMiB" or something"...

#programming

The #haskell ByteString functions like "take" and "drop" take "Int64" instead of plain "Int". Curious. 🤔

#signal users: Live location sharing, end to end encrypted like WhatsApp - how?

Please don't recommend location sharing in Signal, it's only one location instead of a stream.

Typical #haskell packaging situation. I want to decompress a zip file. I search hackage for "zip". Lots of results. The first two are "zip" and "zip-archive". Similar amount of downloads, similar "Last U/L" date. What the hell do I use here? :D I'm now going by number of downloads, where "zip-archive" is the clear winner.

TIL #emacs has "which-function-mode" builtin that displays the function you're in with point in your modeline. Works like a charm.

There's no #emacs #orgmode option to put babel results into a buffer — or even in a popover? Annoying.

Why is #Discord and not #Matrix the platform of choice for indies and organisations?

I managed to get a new package into #nix #nixpkgs: silx (an HDF5 viewer). The review process was a pleasure as usual, once it got started. Now I get a notification about a merge request for a new version of silx, apparently auto-generated by a bot. What's more, after testing this new version, I can just tell the bot via a comment to merge it into master.

This is the only way a huge package repository can be somewhat sustainably developed. Bravo! Do other distributions have something similar?

You're deep in the #haskell hole when you think

floor . (* 1000) . nominalDiffTimeToSeconds . utcTimeToPOSIXSeconds <$> getCurrentTime

is just fine for getting the current UTC time in milliseconds.

But I'm actually serious, the way "NominalDiffTime" works, having high precision and still being integral/fractional, is very nice, slightly overcomplicated numeric type class hierarchy notwithstanding.

I can't be the only one with these #emacs eglot weirdness. It happens independent of the backend used (Python's pyright, elm, haskell-language-server, ...) and it's extremely annoying. Restarting the #eglot session works, but I have to do this all the time.

Function signature is

[a] -> (a -> IO b) -> (b -> IO c) -> ([b] -> IO d) -> IO d

and no, hoogle doesn't find anything for that (or for the simpler case taking [IO b]).

In #haskell, is there a version of "bracket" that works on lists? Say I give it a list [a] and "acquire :: a -> IO b" as well as "release :: a -> IO c" and it'll try to acquire "IO [b]" and if one of the acquires fails, rolls back the already acquired resources?

I could fiddle around with resourcet, but is that the only option? For now, my custom-made function for this makes me uneasy. 🥲
