I recognise the council has made a decision, but given that it's a stupid-ass decision I've elected to ignore it

Today I’m “Doing Type Design” (building a contraption out of lego to help me scan a 30-metre long strip of paper)

Typemedia.org got some paint and is ready for the new year! https://typemedia.org

the cat is out of the bag!!
Who Builds the Future? with yours truly, Travis Kochel & Lizy Gershenzon (@futurefonts), Luke Prowse (@fonts_xyz), Tereza Bettinardi (Clube do Livro do Design), Rutherford Craze (@mass_driver), Maria Doreuli (@contrastfoundry), and Céline Hurka.

after publishing Contraforma #4 (and many recent conversations), I feel like this is a question haunting a lot of us, and I want to spotlight the people actively thinking outside of the box—building platforms, publishing initiatives, and alternative business models.

first lecture is on September 4.
hope you can join the conversation.

This hit #4 on Hacker News last night. They didn’t care for it, but at least I got a good stress test for the new website setup

Frank Herbert understood type design

It’s taken a while to put into words what I find so distasteful about AI in type design (even — especially — the ‘boring parts’). It’s not the threat of being put out of a job.

Some thoughts:

When people ask for book recommendations to get started with typeface design, the list I give them varies a lot based on who they are and what kind of work they’re interested in.

This book is *always* the first thing on the list.

Update: leapfrogged Tahoe straight to the macOS 27 beta. Genuinely much better (once I disabled all the AI stuff, which is incredibly distracting on top of being morally questionable).

Accidentally hit the “convert my computer to Liquid Glass and turn on a bunch of AI features while I sleep” button. Who in their right mind wants this?

I am *this close* to putting a notice on the website about extra-slow response times. I’m managing about 2 emails per day with this heat

Update: MD Thermochrome version 0.5 is out now!

This update adds 19 new icons, 14 new currency symbols, and expands the character set to cover Latin M, supporting 430+ Latin-script languages.

Free for existing @futurefonts customers, as always. (And last chance to get the full 40-style family for $99!)

Last month was the 25 year anniversary of the legalisation of equal marriage in the Netherlands.

To mark the occasion, the Dutch Central Bank and the Royal Mint have together issued a limited-run €5 coin, designed by Koos Breen (https://www.koosbreen.com) and set in MD Nichrome.

I’m grateful to Koos for proactively looking for type made by LGBTQ designers based in the Netherlands, and beyond proud to have played a small role in this immensely meaningful project

Before I squander my afternoon, has anyone already made a Glyphs plugin that puts the ‘Always use Light Mode’ toggle from Appearance settings in the edit window (or under a keyboard shortcut)?

Back in The Hague after an incredible @fontstand conference in Berlin!

My parting gift from an otherwise typographically inspiring weekend, a reminder that the capital ẞ is not yet adopted everywhere:

[New Font Release] Mass-Driver released MD UI. It’s a proportional sibling of MD IO‚ while they share a common visual language‚ neither typeface is intended to perfectly match the other. https://typecache.com/news/6779/ #typecache

Super nice deep-dive into MD UI here from @jectives, comparing it with some much more famous neo-grotesque typefaces. Thanks Curtis!

New release: MD UI.

The International Typographic Style projected one step into the future. UI is a neo-grotesque tuned for maximum performance across all scales; a typeface that augments the function of a timeless form.

Available today in 48 styles.
