The first day of @TheASF’s Community Over Code conference in Glasgow is a go!

if you use Forgejo and would like more CI resources than Codeberg provides (or just don't want to run your own CI): I would like to onboard a few more people/projects to https://felinebuildservices.org/

the function of AI is to steal your work, charge you for the privilege, and then rent your own stolen work back to you

Made it to Glasgow just fine, 50mins later than originally planned. I even picked up a power adapter on the way 😇

The UK east coast is beautiful 😍

Thanks for following along and join next Thursday, when we’re going to do it all over again.

this is the perfect metaphor to understand the distinction between AI doomer concerns versus AI skeptic concerns

If you know me, you know you will pry “Let computers do what computers do best” from my cold, dead hands — and an LLM(ish construct) would be a truly wonderful fit for a scenario where you let it loose on your own (potentially private/internal) code base, let it gobble up all the history, code changes etc. and give you insight that might have been lost over the years/decades of evolution.

The main issue, of course is, for the LLM to be able to do or explain _anything at all_ it must be, first an foremost, an LLM, hence whatever baseline model one would use that must also have been trained (and re-trained) on a large corpus of the total sum of civilization's achievements thus (having resulted) in astronomical cost/emissions AND still being an extractive endeavor where the creators of the source training data were not recompensed. Just being an "open weight" source model does not address any of these concerns.

Small hiccup on account of a power line failure on the west coast line and I’m now going via Edinburgh, but no biggie.

book series "something something - the missing fixing broken shit manual"

Hello UK o/

This is an expansion on the theme of that old post about "someone should remind the rich that before unions the way workers addressed grievances was by dragging the factory owner out of his house and beating him to death in front of his family, because I feel like they forgot".

Brennan Lee Mulligan has a story about a kid at camp who was very good at using his words, and used that ability to bully and belittle other kids at the camp. And a kid finally hit him for it, and he was shocked the counselors wouldn't do anything about it. And Brennan explains to the kid "you have this ability, if you use it to abuse those without that ability they will find other ways to make their displeasure known."

And I find myself thinking about this story a lot these days, both in the context of the increasingly naked capture of our society by the rich and in the context of people thinking they're going to LLM rules lawyer big companies' copyright. It feels like people are increasingly trying to find loopholes in the system of our rules-based society, and have forgotten that the rules are an agreement, not physics, and if you break the spirit of the agreement badly enough, the letter of the agreement is not going to save you.

People will find other ways to make their displeasure known.

Most obligatory post from literally under the sea. This will never get old 🫶

I can confirm first hand that working with Jenn is a delight. Do not miss out on this. She’ll help find your voice in a cacophony of slop.
