We are working our way down the list, regression testing all Infocom games <https://eblong.com/infocom/> and several tricky modern ones <https://github.com/jeffnyman/entharion#inform>. Our interpreter currently supports Z3, Z4, and Z5 files, which covers the entire Infocom catalog except Arthur, Journey, Shogun, and Zork Zero (Z6) and the very earliest versions of Zork (Z1, Z2). We also support Z7 and Z8, which covers all modern (non-Glulx) games compiled by e.g. Inform, including PunyInform.

I acquired a real T800 TRAM (T800-25, 4 MB) and worked on the NetHack 5 port to make it run on it. This required lowering the memory requirements so it fits in just 4 MB and working on the Link-driver on the Atari side to finally make it fast.

The ATW800/2 port of NetHack 5.0.0 is now very playable. I switched from using the Transputer-Link to shared memory for messaging between the game running on the transputer and the frontend and removed the heavy logging that was going on in the background in the previous debug build.

What is this? Could this be the next stupid niche NetHack port!? 😄

#Nethack #atari #atw800

Of course the OSSC can do it. But it's fiddly and annoying to set up.

But I also found a monitor where this is not only possible, but even easy! The Eizo ColorEdge CG19, a 19" 1280x1024 LCD monitor of a bygone era.

Photo love story in the Alt Text.

The Atari TT deserves the title for most stupid video output ever. Its 640x480 mode actually seems to output 1024 pixels horizontally with huge uneven borders. Almost no monitor be it CRT or LCD has the horizontal phase and width range to display that centered and looking good.

Also: Playtesting NetHack 3.6.7 on a Mega ST with 4 MB of RAM (with an ATW800/2 graphics/transputer board).

But it also works in text mode and even ST-Mono with GEM UI.

Getting NetHack 5 to run in less than 6 MB of RAM was hopeless, so I backported 5.0's UI to the previous version.

Current project: This TT030. It's the "8+50" model (4 MB ST-RAM, 4 MB TT-RAM, 50 MB HDD). Both the TT-RAM board and the ST-RAM board could theoretically take more memory...

TODO:

- cleanup ✔️
- recap the PSU ✔️
- remove battery ✔️
- find out why the TT-Medium image is still terribly flickery
- investigate if upgrades are still available

I've finally gotten around to publishing new snapshots of my m68k NetHack ports. Changes from the last release in June are too numerous to list here, but include:

- revamped GUI
- Status highlights, hitpoint bar
- overview windows, permanent inventory
- TAB autocomplete for extended commands
- sound support (Mac only)
- GUI preferences (Mac)
- Mac now PPC/m68k fat binary

... and a million fixes :-).

My SCSI/Link driver using SCSI Manager 4.3. It could be a bit more stable (tx is rock solid at 470 KB/s). Still some more tuning to do. But we're approaching the theoretical limit here which is probably 500-600KB/s.

My own Macintosh Dayna SCSI/Link driver now auto installs and works on the SE/30.

- complete reimplementation
- uses more "modern" APIs: native OpenTransport driver, PPC native and supports SCSI Manager 4.3
- can be installed by just dragging the driver onto the system folder
- it's already slightly faster even on the SE/30

Still testing the new firmware. These are Mac Plus numbers...

Back at SCSI/Link again with a complete rewrite and a surprise.

I had to run one final test with a 040 class machine. More than twice as fast as before!

What have I gotten myself into just wanting working Ethernet on the Falcon. Now I'm testing transfer speeds on a Mac Plus...

Code cleanup and playtesting NetHack again. This time for Macintosh.

I'm delighted that all the new features also work and kind of make sense on the compact Macs (permanent inventory, Map overview, sound). Initially, these were features developed for the TiBook...
