As a 50 year old man I find it utterly cringe that my generation calls younger people snowflakes, when they themselves lose their shit at a slight design change to a bottle cap or the packaging on some mince.

Hey, I've been avoiding this because I know there are a lot of people in even worse situations and this is partly my own fault because of ADHD and forgetting to pay a utility bill. But I'm about to run into an overdraft situation at my bank that will probably leave me unable to pay next month's mortgage, which has increased by ~$60 from what I've been paying till now( this month I did already pay. I *thought* I had averted this extra expense by changing the insurance policy but they said that will take some time for them to "do an escrow analysis"), and many of this month's basic needs.

So, some amounts that may help: $20---Laundromat so I can be presentable at work.
$200--Past due electric bill. It's actually $329 but I paid part myself already this morning.
$250- get car reliable and legal, again so I can keep my job.
I also have several medications needed for me and my dog, and obviously food and incidentals. Any amount you can spare would help.

If it matters: AuDHD, non-binary, immunocompromised with Rheumatoid Arthritis.

My skills are not what they used to be but if you would like it I can make some art in return.

@cstross They've clearly stopped giving a F.

Going on record to say that for any company in America given the choice between

1. AI productivity gains mean our 10,000 employees can work 4 days a week.

2. AI productivity gains mean we can layoff 2,000 employees and have 8,000 people work 5 days a week.

None will choose option (1).

oh well, now. isn't this just epic. fair play

@TheBreadmonkey Probably it'll be best to pretend you're someone who doesn't have imposter syndrome to get through it.

"When I first came up with the term [Software Engineering], no one had heard of it before, at least in our world. It was an ongoing joke for a long time. They liked to kid me about my radical ideas. It was a memorable day when one of the most respected hardware gurus explained to everyone in a meeting that he agreed with me that the process of building software should also be considered an engineering discipline, just like with hardware."

Not all my #pottery pieces have direct inspiration in nature, but this Japanese tea cup does (available on Etsy): https://morinopottery.etsy.com/listing/4585102714/autumn-brook-rustic-japanese-tea-cup-8

It's a rugged take on a mountain brook I saw a few autumns ago on a hike.

I carved a handful of lines and used wax resist (that lets the stoneware body show) to make the glazes break and pool in flowy blues and golds. I also used paddling (i.e., I thwacked it 😜) to give the wheel-thrown piece an organic, rock-like shape.

I think we'd be better off if everyone viewed AI like you'd view a four year old.

If a four year old tells you a fact about space, it is probably true; kids love learning about space. If they insist they discovered a NEW fact about space, well maybe we don't take that at face value.

Also never ask health advice; we've seen what four year olds lick.

Excel will keep getting better until morale improves

I fell for the Booking.com WhatsApp scam today. There has apparently been a #databreach at #bookingcom, which provides a little bit of truth to this "please verify your credit card now" scam. They knew my name, my phone number, the hotel I was staying at and the exact dates. That, a little bit of time pressure and a potential quick solution got me.

I managed to complete the flow once, which according to them would only reserve the money. Something failed and I tried again. This time they were asking me to confirm the balance of my account for verification, and that finally triggered the alert for me.

In retrospect, the originating WhatsApp number was located in Brazil (which was not where I was going). The name didn't match the name of the Hotel representative in the message, and the website's title was Booking.com, which didn't match the actual host name in the URL. I didn't notice.

Approach shit like this calmly and don't let people push you to rash decisions.

In the song "Hazard" I think Richard Marx definitely killed his girlfriend despite the fact that he swears he's innocent. Who on Earth leaves their partner by the river as the sun goes down? I rest my case.

“You were a doll collector furious they didn’t stay in their packaging” deserves a Pulitzer.

I don’t care where you started out on the political spectrum.

If your kid comes out as trans & you don’t become a rainbow-clad, parade-cheering ally & rock-solid supportive girl/boy/enby dad/mom?

You were never a parent at all.

You were a doll collector furious they didn’t stay in their packaging.

If you can go every level of ham to support their travel hockey league, whether you like hockey or not, you can do it to support their deepest hearts & souls.

For fuck’s sake.
