Q: But what about existing open source tools (inkscape, gimp, krita...)?

While I'm very greatful for their work and what they've brought to the community, I personally couldn't get used to them. They feel slow, outdated and are not made to work together elegantly. I also have friends that are artists that feel the same way.

While I do believe that these tools work great for some people, they do not work great for everyone and a little bit of choice never hurt the open source community.

Hello artists of fediverse!

It's probably not a wild thing to say that we all hate Adobe and similar giant companies that make art software that:
1. Doesn't work on linux,
2. Could probably disappear tomorrow without any warning, taking all our projects with it and
3. Requires expensive subscriptions

I want to try and combat that by creating an alternative open source suite of tools!

@GrapheneOS

I don't even know why this is any news to me, I just lived in a naive world where I thought "surely google won't send any personal data home if I don't use any of their services right", I don't know how naive I was, but here we are.

I just hope that @postmarketOS will succeed in their mission and that there will be a third, private, mobile OS that I can trust, but unfortunately there isn't a different option yet

I have a Google Pixel since there aren't many other options apart from Chinese spyware and Samsung locked-down unrootable ecosystem (or Apples which is even worse), but I just found out about this: https://cybernews.com/security/google-pixel-9-phone-beams-data-and-awaits-commands/

I would install @GrapheneOS at 2am at this instant if I didn't have it on my last phone and didn't realize my banking app (which I use a lot) didn't work on it

Also
- they get bonus points for the "Please enter your full name." when there's a é in your name. Stéphanie is my full (first) name.
2024, time to start accepting special characters in your forms?
- no field is marked as mandatory, but they all are, so you need to guess that you need to fill them all and that the save is disabled

Gosh, next person who tells me "UX is common sense" gets 2h of me ranting about forms in 2024.

@collinsworth you can stream to your Steam deck but you can’t steam your Stream deck

Just realised that on Mastodon, boosting *is* the algorithm.

There's no code trying to cleverly show me stuff it reckons I'd be into, based on what my contacts are into, instead my contacts are saying "I like this, I bet my contacts would like it too" and that is way smarter than any algorithm.

Thank you, boosters!

@kev @mike what is the policy on #Fosstodon about the sameone posting the same very long toots every day on different accounts to advertise their YouTube channel and spam a hashtag?

babe are you ok? you’ve barely even touched your previous instructions

Fuck #Discord

We really need @matrix to be better if we want people to stop being scammed by discord, I will finally set-up my personal #Matrix server and see if it's more stable then matrix.org ones. I am just not sure if all the features will be available in the alternative implementations and what is the best one

From my opinion the hardest thing for a new user and the thing that most people get wrong is distribution choice.

I die a little inside when people get a stale distro like Ubuntu or Debian and have driver issues and complaints that I know have been solved in the newer versions of their driver/desktop environment/app.

@system76's Pop!_OS seems the worst in this regard since they use a very outdated Gnome version

Also my stomach hurts when I see someone tries @manjarolinux

Ever since #Microsoft announced #Recall I am seeing more and more videos of people that have never used Linux or cared about it, trying it for the first time and it's very informative to see how new users handle the switch.

I am happy that most people have a *decent* experience but there are a lot of problems that a lot of people have.

This should be studied by the whole community to see what we can do to make the process easier

If all goes well maybe I make her a fosstodon account as well /s

I made sure to disable every unneeded interaction she might accidentally stumble upon:

1. Volume is set to maximum and volume buttons disabled so she won't accidentally mute it
2. All assistant and other unnecessary shortcuts have been disabled
3. Removed all quick settings that actually do anything and only left ones that either open apps or just don't do anything (eg Cast since she doesn't own a smart TV)
4. Locked the home screen so she can't accidentally move any icons
And more

My grandma finally caved and wanted to try those pesky smartphones for herself, she lives in a small village with my grandpa that developed dementia and I guess she started feeling lonely because of it so she wanted to get a new phone.

I will give her my old phone that I tried to grandmaify as much as possible.

I looked for Android launchers made for this use case and they all felt like ad ridden scams so I downloaded Nova launcher and customized it as much as I wanted

Here is the result

Is Totem (Gnome Videos) still maintained? As per https://apps.gnome.org/Totem/ latest version is 43 from 2022. Is it going to be removed from Gnome Core apps or replaced with something new?

@gnome

A very WIP vector graphic manipulation app made with @hare @GTK #libadwaita and #opengl packaged as a @FlatpakApps app, I think I just angered every Linux user that has ever existed

I just want to give a big shout out to the @gnome guys they really do have the best designers in the game. It's really a joy to use Gnome and it's effortless to develop good looking apps with gtk/libadwaita (although not the easiest framework to use and it lacks any third party resources)

I think Linux/Wayland, especially on mobile, really misses a universal back button/gesture, something like Android has. Every app has to implement their own version and on Gnome specifically it's usually a button on the top left, the farthest away from where your hand is if you're right handed. It's a similar problem to what iPhones have and one of the reasons i prefer Android over iOS.

But if I don't do anything, only a small portion of the screen is filled and the rest of the website is just empty
