This cutie-pie came and said hello to me while I watered the plants this morning (I think they were attracted by me opening up the rain butts) and held still long enough for me to get a picture. Unsure whether butterfly or moth.

As someone whose household has plug-in solar panels on their balcony: keep in mind that they only work if your place has got electricity. So they are not useful for bridging a black-out. If you want to also use them as a back-up source of electricity you might want to also get a battery (also for powering your fridge and NAS and stuff through the night).
Most firefly larvae are predators and feed on slugs and snails among other things. That might be a good reason to make your garden firefly friendly. I also enjoy the eerie little lights floating around the garden in Summer.

I don't know if there is such a manual in English but there's a German book titled How to illegally plant a forest (Wie man illegal einen Wald pflanzt) which cites all the relevant German laws and explains how exactly to create the conditions that make it hard or even impossible for an area to be built over.
Maybe someone could write one for their jurisdictions. Maybe there are government agencies that would (still) be delighted to help?

I remember visiting Brazil at the beginning of this millennium and after the US had decided that everyone's fingerprints needed to be scanned upon entry to the USA, Brazil retaliated by saying "fine, we'll fingerprint ONLY the US-Americans... but with ink." And so my Abuelo was running around with blue fingertips for the first day there.
The EU needs to accept that we do not need to coddle US politicians.

Ist das bei Euch auch so, dass auf Klassenfahrten elektrische Geräte verboten sind? Ich meine die, die eine Steckdose brauchen.
Als ich im letzten Jahrtausend auf Klassenfahrten war (Schullandheim, 2x Skilager, Berlinfahrt, Romfahrt) haben wir Wasserkocher und Kassetten-/CD-Spieler mitgenommen und selbstverständlich benutzt.
Ich kann verstehen wenn man sagt Wasserkocher sind eine Brand- bzw. Verbrennungsgefahr, aber jetzt sind auch Ventilatoren verboten.
Aber vielleicht bin ich auch einfach alt. Bei uns war es auch nicht verboten, dass *tagsüber* Jungs auf den Mädchenzimmern waren (anderherum ist es eh nicht passiert weil wir Mädchen hatten ja die Wasserkocher und CD-Spieler).

I would like you all to know that you guys are enablers of my bad habit of acquiring more books than I need (and I love it!).
Several years ago I learned that birds are classified as dinosaurs and ever since I have delighted in saying "the dinosaurs are screaming" or "the dinosaurs are fighting over who gets to sit in the bath" or "look! dinosaur!" (that last one is when a stork flies overhead). And now I am reading a book that encourages me to continue with this silly behaviour.
I also like the hypothesis that snake and lizard and lots of things that supposedly "taste like chicken" don't actually taste like chicken... they all taste like dinosaur!
It has cooled off so much (19°C outside compared to 28°C yesterday and 40°C 3 days ago) that I have put on socks!

Vor mir gehen zwei ältere Frauen in die Apotheke. Eine tut sich schwer mit dem Gehen. Am Tresen stellt sich heraus: Sie kennen sich nicht; die Eine hat die Andere gefunden wie sie sich an der Häuserwand festhält und fast umkippt vor lauter Hitze.
Fand ich schlau sie gleich um die Ecke in die Apotheke zu bringen. Dort gab es eine Sitzgelegenheit und ein Glas Wasser... und Menschen die sich evtl. mit solchen Situationen besser auskennen als der Normalo.

Yesterday on #MaskUpMonday I was standing at the cash register putting my stuff back in my cart after the cashier had beeped it. The woman in line behind me comments to the woman behind her about my mask and the second woman said "Yeah, no, she's right to be wearing one. I have Long Covid and have now been in early retirement for 6 years."
And later at the drugstore there were two (2!) other people in FFP2 besides me and my kids.

Men, I'm going to ask you to do something for all the women*, girls, enbies, and probably boys out there: go image search for Meta glasses (they're cooperating with Ray Ban) and then whenever you see somebody chatting up somebody and they're wearing those glasses, ask them about those glasses, ruin their video, make them feel uncomfortable.
These glasses have been used to harass, doxx and stalk people.
