Iridescent Colours
This Lapwing, one of about a hundred in the flock, nicely stopped to pose for me. The sun was getting lower making its wings shine in iridescent colours. In winter many flock together here at the London Wetland Centre.

OpenSSH 10.6p2 has been released with a workaround for a critical vulnerability.
https://openssh.com/releasenotes.html#10.6p2
If you operate a Linux system that uses musl libc without PAM (Alpine Linux is one example) then stop reading and set PasswordAuthentication=no or disable SSH for these systems IMMEDIATELY.
This vulnerability does not exist on non-Linux systems, Linux/glibc systems and Linux systems that use PAM for password authentication.
We consider the root cause of this bug to be outside OpenSSH itself, but we're in a good position to deliver a mitigation quickly.
We are making this release as fast as possible (we learned of the problem yesterday) because we have recently observed multiple cases of rapid bug rediscovery by AI agents, sometimes within hours, and so now consider long embargo periods to be a dangerous practice that primarily benefits attackers.
Thanks for Özgün Kültekin of Wakefield (wakefield.co) for reporting this problem to us and for the Alpine Linux developers for making an updated release available at very short notice.
New, from me:
Several staffers at the White House are using computers or mobile devices equipped with residential proxy services that render their internet address available for others to rent, security experts warned today. One of the proxy services is a Russian company whose founder’s web hosting business was ground zero for cyberattacks against election systems in Arizona and Illinois in 2016.

Jay Lit Up by the Setting Sun
I was about to leave the London Wetland Centre, and then this Jay popped up right in front of me and perched on the fence. It then gave me a stare.

Southern Hemisphere Astrophotographers!
⭐💥NEW SUPERNOVA ALERT ⭐💥
It's in a bright, nearby barred spiral galaxy (NGC 1433), which is very favourable for imaging this time of year.
Type 1a, so image over weeks + get light curves!
Details: https://www.wis-tns.org/object/2026ahvu
This galaxy was one of James Dunlop's discoveries (made from here in Sydney in 1826).
I've gone back and imaged a lot of Dunlop's galaxies, and just had a look to see if I had anything in my catalogue ... nothing, sadly!
Supernova location in yellow circle in DESI image.
And this is not limited to folks with the big profesh rigs!
People with Seestars and other smart 'scopes should also try.
I was able to catch a supernova using my Seestar for weeks *during the light festival* only 1.5 km from the centre of Sydney's city.
This is a fun Community Science project!
A Jack Snipe Seemingly Running Away
Jack Snipes aren't nearly as easy to see as the already well camouflaged Common Snipes. But this lovely bird showed up right on front of the hide at RSPB Rainham Marshes a few weekends ago, bobbing its tail while foraging.

@tubemapper Who/which company, do you use for making and/or printing your calendars? (And would you recommend them?)
These "Personal account for reading timelines." account requests are really getting annoying now. #FediAdmin

a string of small lights not unlike what you might put on a christmas tree, but NOT placed on a christmas tree, are called...
Anthropic think they should be able to release a model that kills 50 humans and causes $1bn of financial damage to organisations before there is talk of regulation.
Redshank Strolling On The Mud
This lovely bird was mooching about white close by on the mudflat at Brancaster Staithe. Picking through the puddles and mud to find something to eat.

Goldfinch On The Seedheads
We spotted this lovely bird returning form RSPB Snettisham. It was happily feeding on the seeds in the drizzle.

Finally A Photo Of A Cetti's Warbler
I have heard their songs countless times — they're very loud! And seen fleeting glances if then before. But finally one decided to almost pose on this branch in the reeds of the WWT London Wetland Centre, right in the city.

Great Egret Has Caught a Fish
A bit in the distance, but the first time a got a reasonable shot of a Great Egret at WWT Arundel. It had caught a fish, which it then proceeded to eat. I love its green eye. Hopefully I get to see it a bit closer at some point.

you ever write code so inefficient you have to start complaining about the global allocation of RAM
