We’re having some trouble with #Adobe Illustrator eating up the last 20GB remaining on a macOS Sequoia laptop, and I can’t make it recognize an external USB stick as as a scratch disk. (Photoshop sees it, however). Any ideas why that might be? Illustrator has full disk access from macOS settings.

New release: The Estimated typeface derives from a limited set of alphanumeric characters that accompanied the estimated sign (℮) at its introduction by the European Economic Community in July 1971.

While the symbol entered everyday use, the strange ornamental sans serif fell into obscurity. The uncredited schematic drawings approach blackletter capitals morphologically, but their naive execution leaves an uncanny impression. The numerals are simpler constructions, with rounded terminals drawing from industrial draft lettering. Alongside the obtuse ℮-mark and the alien-styled hexagon, the typeface appears less like the domain of gray bureaucracy, and more like the decals of an experimental Skunkworks project.

New release: Arny and Arny Sans, my take on the quintessential Art Nouveau typeface, Arnold Böcklin. Take a closer look on my all-new website, herzbergdesign.com

A very enjoyable essay on a little-known design project by Ladislas Mandel:

Had a wonderful chat about the early history of tile rummy, about which I will be able to share more around the end of November :-) #TileRummy

Has anyone tried scripting in Affinity? The API seems quite vast: https://sdk.affinity.studio/33000/

With a friend we’ve been preparing to give a practical Git workshop: teaching how the commit graph really works, how to get out of trickier situations, etc.

We don’t know what exactly people want to learn, though, or what they know already. Could you help out? We made a survey that takes one or two minutes to fill out, and it’ll help us massively: https://tally.so/r/A7e7Xl

We’ll publish the results once responses settle. Boosts very much appreciated :)

NEWSLTR #24•October ’26. In yours mailboxes soon. Illustrated points are discussed and various links are shared. A pretty rich concoction of fact, theory, hope and wishful thinking. Letters in stone. An update for a classic. You, friend, can also read this thing, for free, in the archive and you can still even subscribe, for free, anytime.

This probably counts as an #ad, but I was very polite and I wrote every word.

The new Monokrom website contains a mountain of essays, articles, biographies, visual references, characters, typefaces, and data - tons of it. Everything comes with notes and a reference list. Each entry has a byline with publication date and date for the last update, allowing others to reference. There are bound to be errors and misunderstandings, but the sources are open and easily checked. All of it is produced without artificial intelligence.

Friends in the US: Pazzo Books in Boston has just received a cache of art books from the (very good) collection of Lucy Sante:

If, besides a change in design, your new (macOS-only?) Firefox suddenly got very crammed, it may be because it switched over to a compact appearance. Settings > Appearance > Window Density. Still very radiusy but a bit more comfortable.

Kristoffer Tjalve over at https://naiveweekly.com asked me how I read blogs these days and about my e-ink setup, and my answer turned into an article.

Making things requires you to think about every single aspect. The methods and the materials, purpose, goal, practice. And then maybe you will also think about how the tools should work, or you start to wonder about how it was done before. When and why is it good enough? This is curiosity in its most essential form. I guess I had a vague mental image of Auriol / Française, but still not it

https://fontsinuse.com/typefaces/3260/auriol

(DeVinne Ornamental is in the general direction, but not it) https://fontsinuse.com/typefaces/17617/devinne-ornamental

Ugh, I’m coming up blank for the typeface used for “Nouvelle édition” on this (presumed) late 19th c. title page. Help? #fontid

If we get wide support for nesting, mixins, custom media queries, and their combination, I will declare CSS ergonomics solved.
