I often look to traditional Nigerian pottery forms for inspiration. The pot on the left is a vessel from the Nupe tribe. I’ve read as extensively as I can about how they may have been used by it never makes sense to me. First of all, the pots are quite large, no less than 40 inches in circumference, so very heavy to pour from—and the narrow neck makes pouring even more difficult. I address this by making mine a smaller handheld size with a spout. #Nigeria #AfricanArt #pottery #ceramics

When it comes to foraging, larger female #bumblebee workers are better than their smaller sisters.
They return more #nectar, fly at lower temperatures, can probe deeper #flowers and may be less likely to be preyed upon.

Quercy is highly suspicious of this whole "out" thing.

HIGHLY.

SUSPICIOUS.

This looks unreal!

Red Sprites above the village of Montemaggiore on the French island of Corsica by photographer Florian Riou on September 28, 2026.

Red sprites are electrical discharges that flash high above massive thunderstorm clouds, at altitudes of 50 to 90 km and last but a few milliseconds.

The ones here appear quite low. Or perhaps they are much farther behind the houses.

This is one of the absolute coolest shots of the expanding debris from a supernova explosion I have ever seen, and I've seen a *lot*.

So what the heck's going on here with this thing? Hey, let me explain.

Palaeontology in Alberta owes much to the legion of dedicated amateurs who scour the badlands for fossils and help with identification and discovery. One of the foremost of these was Hope Johnson (1916-2010), whose contributions to palaeontology are too numerous to mention. Darren Tanke, of the Royal Tyrrell Museum of Palaeontology, has generously made his biography of this amazing palaeontologist freely available to everyone.

This is cool. For a while I used #TalonVoice really just for the speech-to-text capabilities. But, with Talon that's only one part of its many capabilities and you gotta screw around with config files.

Pretty neat to have an Ubuntu-native GNOME app for speech-to-text.

In terms of longtivity, the biggest relay servers like nostr.wine charge a subscription to use the relay.

In nostr.wine's case it's ~$2/month. It's paid through Nostr's integrated bitcoin protocol.

Nostr has other similarities with crypto, in that it's meant to be an app layer for many different #Nostr apps. ActivityPub can do that too, but Nostr seems to be built with this in mind.

I would spend more time building my own follow list, but the accounts I want to follow are already on Mastodon.

On a whim I thought I'd see what #Nostr is actually like.

It was created in 2020 by “fiatjaf” of Brazil due to Twitter moderation. It's most similar to #HolloSocial in that you don't have a home server, it's only relays to pass your messages. But Hollo with crypto ideas.

80% of Nostr is the crypto community, and generally right-wing. Naturally everyone says “GM” there. Way more bots on Nostr.

Oddly if you're not into crypto, the follow packs are really just Mastodon accounts bridged to Nostr.
