Hey academics: 'By consuming AI products (which is optional, nobody – nobody – is forcing you to do it as an intellectually–independent academic, which you are, aren’t you), you are fueling these crises and are therefore actively sabotaging and annihilating the hard efforts and work of many of your own peers in environmental or social sciences... Congratulations, you are now explicitly part of team “aggravating problems” instead of team “finding solutions”.'

Intending to write another column about the treatment of #ME/CFS patients this week, pegged to new research findings on the biological basis. My question for sufferers:
Are any of you still being offered inappropriate (psych/GET etc) "treatments"?
Please email george at monbiot dot info. Thanks.

EDIT for those who are interested, I'll settle to this paper by Quinn Slobodian himself https://www.ft.com/content/23e93161-4817-4066-8f4c-58c131b4f4be

I am looking for something to cite about the link between between tech billionaires and new eugenics, with a focus on Peter Thiel's backed Orchid society.

Any idea? #academicChatter

I thought I would be able to ignore everything about the Pope coming to Paris, but my office (and the place where I'm a guest speaker at a workshop) is smack in the middle of the no-traffic, no-public transport zone.

At my disabled pace, we're talking a good half-hour walk from where I can easily arrive by train/metro to the perimeter of the zone.

#Math #AI 27/n

One week ago, on September 4th, Anthropic announced that it had more or less done the same job, namely generated a complete formalization of the proof of Fermat's Last Theorem. They claim the work took 11 days, “largely autonomously”, so that we now have 13 million lines of Lean code that contains a complete proof of that theorem.

Those files compile, but require 20 more times to Buzzard's computer to compile than the Mathlib library (which on my computer requires several hours), and that computer has 96 cores and 500GB RAM. So this is a new kind of formalized proof, one that escapes standard computers and belongs to the world of supercomputers, thus pushing back farther the gap between mathematics and its formalized form.

In other words, what Anthropic did is clearly an impressive technical achievement, one that might be relevant to AI industry, but is definitely irrelevant for mathematics.

@mjb @frincon I sadly don't see how I can guarantee none of my coauthors ever use commercial AI tools to help them write (reformulate sentences, translate from French, etc), even though I am not using them myself, so I cannot in good faith commit not to publish any mathematical text generated by AI models (unless my research papers don't count as mathematical texts, which could be argued, but I'm more interested in the spirit of the membership commitment than in its letter). Which is not a happy Sunday thought.

The little girl sitting next to me on the train platform earlier today was right: this thing I'm making is pretty :-) #crochet

Corrected headline: OpenAI uploaded hundreds of malicious packages to public repository, claims it was an accident and can't be prevented

I've joined the Association for Human Mathematics and I think fellow members of the mathematics community who value and prioritise human mathematics should consider joining too https://www.ahmath.org/

Open Letter about the Mathathon

“On October 30th, 2026, Caltech will begin hosting the Caltech Mathathon, a math hackathon in which participants are encouraged to solve open research problems by prompting LLMs. Two prominent AI companies, Anthropic and OpenAI, will supply participants with 2 million dollars in AI credits. This event is likely to have destructive impacts for the mathematical community.”

A lot of people on Fedi have never read the Spoon Theory essay, and it shows.

When you have the time and energy, take a moment to read it. It's truly a gift to yourself and the people around you.

So mathematicians are now angry that LLM companies came to steal their jobs, recycle their work without citing it, and damage trust in their own community.

You know, after creatives, designers, musicians, writers, coders, and plenty others suffered the same for the last 4 years.
Better late than never.

It's okay to refuse to engage with LLM-based commercial tools on the basis of moral/ethical grounds such as their ecological, social, political or economical costs.

"Yeah but they help disabled people with, like, transcription and automation, they do some good as well, you can't ignore that"–you know what, I can and will. I'm disabled myself, and a slave could definitely be a huge help, is that an argument in favor of having a nuanced discussion on the benefits of slavery?

(It's not an entirely idle parallel either – why are so many people eager to have access to an anthropomorphized piece of software that's ready to do their bidding while stroking their ego?)

Hello world! I'm a mathematician based at Technical University Berlin interested in the intersections of algebra, analysis, probability and geometry. Most precisely, I'm studying iterated-integrals signatures of paths and related constructions from both an algebro-geometric and noncommutative/nonassociative algebra angle.

I'm very closely following the critical discourse around LLMs/GPT and mathematics. This was one of my main motivations for setting up this account. However, I'd like to use this account more generally for scientific communication, within mathematics and beyond. I hope to share more about my current research soon!

Meanwhile, have a look at my website if you'd like: https://www.rosapreiss.net/

Since my account is brand new and I'm looking for new contacts, feel very free to comment if you'd like to connect, and boosts are appreciated of course :)

A group of 25 Fields Medalists, including myself, have made a joint declaration on Math and AI: https://mathandai.org/ . We welcome additional signatories (similar to the Leiden declaration), as can be seen on the page.
