Travelling to Dublin for EuroLLVM today - looks like a great line-up of talks. Hopefully see some of you there!

There are many tools for unprivileged sandboxing on Linux. You should probably go use one of them. But I wrote this little 'shandbox' script to scratch my itch https://muxup.com/shandbox

/home/$user/sandbox shows up as /home/sandbox within the shared sandbox, which otherwise can only access explicitly mapped files/dirs.

Unique per-process sandboxing would provide a tighter security boundary, but it's also darn convenient having this separate but shared low privileged space.

2% of Golang 2025 survey respondents are deploying their Go software to RISC-V. Take that, s390x! https://go.dev/blog/survey2025#operating-systems-and-architectures

I'm delighted to see two of @igalia's projects for RISE highlighted in @ludovic_dev and Nathan Egge's presentation at the RISC-V Summit Europe.

Find out more about our work on both LLVM optimisation and CI/testing on the RISE blog (with more to come in the future of course!):

I'm on the latest episode the TMPDIR podcast hosted by Khem Raj @himvis and Cliff Brake. We talk about various projects I've been involved in (RISC-V, LLVM, lowRISC, Raspberry Pi), current work at @igalia, and tech in general. Thanks for having me on! https://tmpdir.org/043/

Wondering which is most satisfying - reaching inbox zero, or clearing out the "wall of shame" git status shows you of all the untracked files you can't quite bring yourself to delete.

My total rewrite of the instructions on cross-compiling Clang/LLVM for Linux using Clang/LLVM for Linux has now landed.

If you want to cross-compile LLVM without getting angry - this is your guide! https://llvm.org/docs/HowToCrossCompileLLVM.html

Of course, I speak from fresh frustration.

Starting to wonder if the number of people Matrix/Element has put off from using E2E encryption is larger than the number of people's it's brought into the fold.

Some notes on ccache+LLVM. Summary: if you do a lot of builds across different checkouts/worktrees/builddirs, be sure to set the base_dir option and -DLLVM_USE_RELATIVE_PATHS_IN_DEBUG_INFO=ON https://muxup.com/2025q1/ccache-for-llvm-builds-across-multiple-directories

It's not ideal, but it's tricky on our side too as often we get great people we don't exactly want to reject but might not have the right thing lined up for them right now. So they tend to get stuck in a database.

I've started a Bluesky starter pack of LLVM contributors/developers https://bsky.app/starter-pack/llvmweekly.org/3lbc6zdki232c - check it out and let me know if I'm missing you or anyone else!

TIL: util-linux 2.40 contains a handy utility 'exch' that allows you to atomically exchange two paths (including directories). https://github.com/util-linux/util-linux/blob/master/Documentation/releases/v2.40-ReleaseNotes#L52

The slides from the tutorial I gave earlier this year at the RISC-V Summit Europe: Supporting custom RISC-V extensions in LLVM are now online

I find it helpful to queue up things I want to read for a closer look the following day (delayed gratification, and avoiding constantly refreshing the same sources). pwr is how I implement this terminal-centric workflow https://muxup.com/pwr

Maybe it's useful to you as well?

I'm honoured to have been selected for the Software Contributor Award by the RISC-V International Board of Directors. I recently realised I've been working with RISC-V in some way for 10 years now (after a trip to Krste's group in Berkeley back in May 2014) - here's to another 10!

Stick the following in your ~/.gitconfig to make `git branch` sort by most recently committed (thanks to @wingo for this one!):

[branch]
sort = -committerdate

If you're at the upcoming RISC-V Summit Europe in Munich, be sure to attend my tutorial "Implementing support for custom RISC-V extensions in LLVM" https://riscv-europe.org/summit/2024/twgs#tutorial-on-implementing-support-for-custom-risc-v-extensions-in-llvm (Monday June 24th, 3pm)

Sure you can have a radio broadcast license, as long as you promise not to pollute the airwaves with classical or jazz music https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SLAM!_(radio_station)#Programming_rules

This is delightful (and horrifying?) - the original Starcraft had a buffer overflow in its map parsing code, that was used by community map makers to patch the game and make custom maps that wouldn't have been possible otherwise. Starcraft: Remastered added an emulator to allow as many of these maps as possible to work. https://0xeb.net/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/StarCraft_EUD_Emulator.pdf https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DmA3GBJzABE
