As I warned about months ago now, I can confirm that Google Chrome's #AI API is now actively being used for device fingerprinting and tracking purposes.
Out of 100 of the top global english language content sites - around 30% are actively using the API for fingerprinting, Google Advertising (profiling) or both) without the legally required consent (EU law).
After a decade at Cloudinary, I am looking work.
I'm a web developer who's done a lot of devrel, too. I'm good at:
- building on the front of the front end,
great at:
- the web platform (browsers and standards),
- researching and communicating the hows and whys of all sorts of things,
and the stem of my T-shaped skills is:
- "images, on the internet".
If you could use any of that or know someone who could – hit me up!
I’ve spent the better part of the last 2 years both using coding models and trying to help these models deliver higher quality code and I honestly could not agree more with Zach here… https://www.zachleat.com/web/ai-websites/
"Now I understand! The Popover API can work with CSS anchor positioning. Let me fix this properly…"
Yes, let me help you again, dear LLM. It’s not that they can do all of this by default on their own.
Careful with these “AI assistant” services … as many have been saying, there’s a steep privacy cost.

Practical Accessibility by @SaraSoueidan - highly, highly recommended!
I already have the new “Accessible UX Research” book by Dr Michele A. Williams, classics such as the „Web Accessibility Cookbook“ by @matuzo, and “Inclusive Components” by @heydon and having an eye on the “Practical Accessibility” course by @SaraSoueidan 👀
If you’d have some education budget to blow before end of the year, what #web #accessibility related things would you spend it on? 💸
Any #courses, #books, etc. to recommend? (Conferences excluded unfortunately)
"The totalistic ambition of the AI industry to bring everything and everyone in line with an ever-expanding AI enterprise might be interpreted as the realisation of this world-as-machine. Whether it is energy or water resources that must be made available to feed AI data centres or whether it is all of our data being fed into large language model training, the AI industry’s appetite for accumulation, as Anders would put it, is insatiable."

"When I do generate content using #AI, I find that the requirement to check it for accuracy negates any time saved during the writing part."
This has always been my experience with tools that are aimed to do the work on your behalf, including #CSS frameworks (when they were most popular).

Relevant to my course students who get a free Polypane trial (and recurring discount) with their purchase!
Polypane is fantastic browser for us devs and the #a11y features make it even more valuable for our work 🙌🏻
Kilian is doing great work ✨ This is one of the advantages of products (and courses 😉) that are created by developers for developers. The creator knows the pains and needs and tailors the product to those needs.
“The death of web development education – Rescuing a field from disappearing” by @molily

I've reached the point where if your talk clearly has AI slides and it shows from your incoherent speech, I'll walk out.
I made some minor design and content structure tweaks to the Practical Accessibility course website (ahead of its third anniversary). https://practical-accessibility.today
One of the changes I made was creating a dedicated page for the many many reviews & testimonials that the course has received over the past 3+ years.
A heartfelt thank you to each & every one who has shared their experience & recommended the course. I’m forever grateful to you all. 🫶🏻
More to come!

Thoughts on an Accessibility “Get Well” Plan:
I do the biggest chunk of my blog and course writing in my code editor, which currently is VSCode.
My favorite color theme for writing happens to be an #accessibility-focused theme called "dislexic”—“a theme set on a light red background for dyslexics (with optional astigmatism)”

New as of Chrome 150: loading="lazy" on <video> and <audio>.
A lazy video delays loading its file, poster and autoplay until it's almost in the viewport. Firefox and Safari don't support it yet, so media there still loads straight away.
I have 11 specifications and documents open in my browser now as I continue working on what was supposed to be a very simple #accessibility course chapter update, which *is*, as usual, turning into a complete chapter rewrite because of my silly perfectionist brain. 😮💨

“The Anthropic scientists [..] said that their A.I. had taken “the first steps of a biological discovery on its own.””
[Mario Rodríguez Mestre, a computational biologist] “disputed that claim. “They are the same systems we have been studying for years,” he said. And they are the same enzymes, he said, that he had described to Anthropic’s A.I.”

AI companies stealing people’s work and claiming that their AI is making new discoveries. How long before humanity stands up to these companies?
What’s your favourite UX feature of HTML?
