Re last boost, so much of the indigation and rage we feel aboutthe way things are going is impotent or, far worse, directed at each other for not according the same priority to the same principles as us. Please can more people, in addition to communicating the necessary information, supply more ways to make a difference. Don't just tell us what's going on, keep suggesting things we can do about it, ways we can push back, ways this train can be turned around. Otherwise, what's the point?

Let's hope he doesn't waste it and works to reverse the troubling trends. Freedom, protection of democracy, tax on the rich, public service investment, energy and digital sovereignty, environmental protections up; special relationship and lobby influence down.

The hardest part is avoiding complacence. We are trapped in a system that makes it very difficult to be ethical, very difficult not to support evil agendas with our money and choices. We have to try. It's no good saying, "it's all so hard, whatever I do is bad so I should do nothing." If you're not doing everything, no-one should blame you, if you're not doing the same things as other people, no-one should blame you; if you're not doing anything at all, not trying...that's a different matter.

We should not seek perfection, but be satisfied with better options rather than worse. The left can seem rather puritanical. Imperfect alliances are all we have, imperfect people are all we have. If we hold out for perfection, the oligarchs will win and the things we love will crumble while we wait, bicker, shame each other and sit in our own shame bubbles. Let's help each other to be better, help companies to be better, encourage companies and individuals when they make positive change.

Encouragement promotes solidarity, community, a sense of belonging, a sense of support. If we truly want community as we claim, we should promote it.

Every time a company takes a stand, opts for principle over proffit, refuses to be unethical, stands up for its base, we should congratulate them, make them feel good about themselves, promote them, guide people to them, away from less ethical alternatives.

Someone thinks "my whole family uses Facebook. If I stop, or worse, try to force them to migrate, I might make myself an outcast and close myself off from pictures of my growing relatives". what should we do? Say "Too bad for you. Take one for the team! Have the hard conversations, risk isolation from your family." We shouldn't demand such sacrifices from struggling strangers on pain of shame. We should, instead, help them to tranistion, suggest what they can do to fight in their own way.

These companies and people that do evil with the money we give them must be brought to heel, should not be patronised. So what do we do?

Promote, suggest, encourage the use of ethical alternatives. Encouragement works so much better than shame. By shaming one another, we fragment the resistance we should all be trying to build.

All the shame on here. If you use AI, you're bad, if you use Amazon, you're bad. If you buy this, you're supporting genocide. It's not fair and it puts the burden on the individual user, making him or her feel bad about him/herself for not doing enough, while they worry that so what if they make their lives exponentially harder if no-one else does? what will they achieve?

None of this is to say that any of the things people would like to see boycotted aren't problematic, they are. (thread)

the position of getting so worked up about glasses with cameras seems quite ridiculous to me when there are all these ring door bells snapping everyone wherever they go; parking cameras on cars can be abused; and we have had smart phones for what, like 16 years now, and any one of them could be recording you without permission or taking photographs etc. Why get so worked up about the glasses in particular?

Just to be clear, when we say highly unconstitutional, do we mean illegal and morally reprehensible?

does anyone know anything about washing machines? Specifically washer dryers? Mine is making funny noises and not turning off when it starts taking water with the result that it fills and floods my kitchen when I open the door or the little filter thing at the bottom. Even I remember that a judge issued a court order reminding everyone that there are these things called rights and those not interfering with ICE may not be detained or molested. 🙁
