Vienna! Next tuesday (Oct 13th) we're doing the next #permacomputing meetup. \(^ヮ^)/ This time starting already at 18:00!

Energie-P2P startet ab heute in 🇦🇹!
https://energiegemeinschaften.gv.at/peer-to-peer-vertraege/
„Im Rahmen von Peer-to-Peer-Verträgen können sich zwei oder mehrere aktive Kunden, also natürliche oder juristische Personen, zusammenschließen, um gemeinsam eigenerzeugten Strom zu nutzen.“
Ohne dafür zuerst einen Verein gründen zu müssen, wie bei Energiegemeinschaften.
Less than four weeks to the next https://vienna.permacomputing.net meetup \o/ – mark the date:
October 13th, 2026 – this time starting at 18:00!
For the upcoming edition we're again doing something a bit special – we will be guests at Wien IT, who are kindly hosting us at their venue.
Wien IT is the "IT infrastructure provider for the infrastructure provider of the city of vienna" (the latter being the Wiener Stadtwerke) and as such a big entity. Our gatherings in contrast are normally situated in small, alternative and community-run spaces. However, when we met with Martin (who reached out to us) to chat about both our worlds and approaches we felt the spirit was right and decided to go for it!
We already have three talks lined up for the upcoming meeting: Bjorna Kalaja will finally join us to present on "Measuring the carbon footprint of microservice architectures", Martin Simpson will share demos and insights from his artistic work, and Martin Michalitsch (mentioned just before) will give us insights on systemic action for more sustainable computing in the context of Wien IT.
To get to us on October 13th take the U3 to Erdberg, exit towards Thomas-Klestil-Platz, approach the Orbi Tower and enter the WIT Base (https://www.wienit.at/kontakt). You found us.
Looking foward to seeing you all there again!
The next vienna #permacomputing meetup is happening on the 13th of October and we have a bunch of great talks:
Bjorna Kalaja will talk about Measuring the carbon footprint of microservice architectures,
Martin Simpson will demo interactive art powered by renewable energy and Martin Michalitsch will discuss implementing GreenOps as lived practice:

Announcing the next #permacomputing Berlin Meet-Up
# Local Area Network Party #
> Mom can we get network? We have network at home.
Network at home is a LAN!
Join us for very local experiments with local-only networking: files, streaming, useful tools, databases and games. Bring a nice device. Bonus points if it has an actual wired Ethernet. People of all skill and interest levels are very welcome. But do note this event is exclusively for local-area-present people: If you want to enjoy it, you gotta be there!

What makes me hopeful: There is A LOT of energy and mobilisation against "AI" and data centers right now. This is an opportunity to organise protest beyond mere symptoms but build movements that call for a transformation of our economy and what technologies are being deployed. This can be a spark to lit a fire that burns away much more than just some buildings with servers in it.

The State of Devs survey is out and it's looking at things like mental health, outlook on the industry, and feelings about AI - worth filling out!

Permacomputing Vienna (and the overall Following the Sun gathering) turned out so lovely! The venue in particular – @kv_r – was magical today. When the sun came out in full and passed through the thick greenery above as a tapestry of bright dots, it felt almost like we were sitting in a field of stars °˖✧◝(⁰▿⁰)◜✧˖°, wow.
Thanks everyone who made this happen – organizing internationally, hosting us physically and virtually, and for all the friendly people who came by on a sunday noon/afternoon! <3
Our next permacomputing event in vienna is on October 13th (probably 19:00–22:00), save the date! :)
Hey all, I have a big favour to ask.
At the beginning of the week, a large client that we had 100% expected to get started with a large project this month has dropped out at the most inconvenient time for us.
My team at @neighbourhoodie and I are looking for any and all projects we might be able to help with, the sooner the better.
We are really good at turning manual and/or analogue processes into digital ones, especially, but not limited to, if parts of the process need to work while a person or device is offline.
We have proven this repeatedly by making substantial contributions to fighting a Ebola epidemic, testing the first ever Ebola vaccine and distributing the very first COVID vaccinations to all eligible Bavarians.
We are also really good at taking your prototypes and turn them into real-life, secure, reliable, fast and scalable systems that you can bet your company on for years. From UX to SRE, we got you covered.
You need a frontend for a backend service you’ve built, we got you. You need a backend for a mobile app or game you’ve built, we got you.
We also excel at designing, building and debugging distributed database systems of all sizes and shapes. If you sync your photos with tools from the large red brick company, we helped with that.
We can help migrate your infrastructures from US clouds to EU hosters (within reason). Wanna move from GitHub to a self-hosted or managed Forgejo? Get in touch!
Additionally, in the past three years we helped 15+ FOSS projects from systemd, to GNOME, to PHP and PyPI, as well as Servo and Log4j with maintenance and security tasks in all sorts of programming languages and environments. We can help with yours, too.
We can also help join your team (remotely, CE[S]T) to augment any current projects you’re need accelerated.
I’m happy to answer any question you might have.
And I appreciate any leads and all boosts <3

I've signed up to attend LIMITS 2026 virtually https://computingwithinlimits.org/2026/ , the topics look super interesting particularly ones around solar powered systems. I also appreciate the timings as I'll be able to hopefully jump in after work.
🚨 Cool Job Alert! Are you:
- a front-end dev (Sass, Vanilla JS, React)
- based in Austria / Vienna
- ideally with some backend knowledge (Python, Django, APIs)
- looking for work in a small, dedicated, remote team?
Let's talk! (reposts for reach appreciated)
In case you missed it: my books are open for consulting and contracting gigs! 🚀
If you need extra hands on a project or strategic technical guidance, let's chat.
For thirty years of my career studying this, I considered the #AMOC tipping risk a high impact but low probability risk for the future of humanity.
Recently I've changed my mind.
Here I explain why. ⬇️

Any masto.host users here? We have a small community on masto.host, and only a handful of people are regularly active, but we still have almost 36 GB of database usage. Any idea how to reduce this in any way? I’m paying nearly 100 bucks each month just for hosting. #mastodon
