Seems I've had DNS misconfigured for my mastodon instance for the last few weeks since migrating the container to a different system. That's fixed now.

The family and I went to Vintage Computer Fest Midwest today. Had a great time. Got to meet @geerlingguy and @veronica. Saw tons of cool old tech. Talked to a bunch of cool nerds including the @fsf. Really looking forward to going back again next year. If you can make the trip to Chicagoland, I highly recommend it.

Fictional person to me: "What did you do for the holiday weekend?"
Me: "Oh, I migrated virtual machines between Proxmox servers."

Wasn't planning on upgrading my CPU this weekend, but Ryzen 9 5900XT here we come.

(me walking into dark room)
"Aziz! Light!"
(turns on light)
"Much better. Thank you Aziz."

I've been taking some time lately to work on redesigning my blog before getting the content updated and migrated to Ghost CMS.

Tonight, though, I did something fun and setup a custom 404 page.

No time frame on when the new site will go live but hopefully soon.

New to me CPU ... what on Earth would compel me to buy a used Haswell chip? I'll tell you what.

For about 3.5 years now I've been running Opnsense on a used I3-4160 Dell SFF PC that I bought for like $30 shipped. It's worked great. Except when the heat is on or it's hot outside. Then it's noisy AF.

Hoping that replacing the 54W chip with a 35W chip will make a difference. And some fresh thermal paste won't hurt either.

The only "issue" I'm having is that the mobile app says that notifications aren't configured ... even though they are and I've tested that they work.

My initial impressions of Mattermost are pretty good - in particular after having run Rocket Chat for a couple years.

I was originally thinking of trying Zulip instead of Mattermost but changed my mind when looking at the documentation. Anyone out there have any experience with it that can weigh in?

Spent a good bit of today working on the
#homelab. Deployed nebula-sync for my pi-hole instances finally and I've setup and started testing Mattermost (Teams Edition) via Docker.

NOTE TO PARENTS THIS XMAS

Be sure to remind your children that Santa operates under quantum rules. He exists in a superposition that lets him deliver gifts to all kids at once. If someone observes him directly, the wave function collapses and delivery fails globally.

This is why kids must stay in bed.
It’s not about rules — it’s about physics.

For those who don't know, my wife is a romance author. A year ago she asked me to create a website for her for this purpose. FINE. I did. In January of this year it was ready to go with the exception of needing some things from her to finish it.

It's now December. I've now been given a deadline of Tuesday to have the site finished and online.

Allow me to vent my frustration to the fediverse because inaction on other's part has now become my problem.

Every holiday season, I think about this short fiction that a friend of mine wrote over a decade ago. Allow me to share with you a bit of "CreepyPasta" titled "White Christmas".

So excited to be done with the 9-5 for the next 6 days. Let the festivities begin!

I didn't ask for this. I don't want this. Does anyone really want this?

Let's just say I'm glad I bought 64GB a couple years ago.

Who has two thumbs and tried on the sweatshirt he bought 30 years ago when he started college only to discover that it fits better than expcted? THIS GUY!

And yes ... that is a giant turkey (also on the shirt).

Some days I think my kid is delusional lol. A few minutes ago, he tried to convince me to give him my 34" ultrawide monitor because 'he loves it'.

He's 10. I'm sorry - he can wait a few years at least and then maybe we get him something better than he has currently. For Minecraft, though, he's fine.
