Jul 12, 2026, 3:36 PMThe state-specific nature of filling senate vacancies is codified in the 17th Amendment, which is confusingly full of wiggle room. Governors must call a special election to fill a seat, but a state legislature can empower a governor to make a "temporary" appointment before that happens. And there's no (federal) constitutional deadline for holding the special election (though that may be specified in state law).
