Every Friday afternoon, I was sent down to the harbour to pick up a fish, fresh off the boat, that had been set apart for Mrs K, my nan.
One time, the trawlers Captain was apologetic that they only had a small catch, and all he could spare was one family small fish.
He explained that they had picked up a distress call on the radio from another vessel, so they stopped what they were doing and sped 50 miles out of their way to give whatever aid they could.
"Why would you do that, if its costing you money, costing you a catch?" I asked.
"We do it because, if we were to put out a distress call, or send up a flare, everyone would drop what they were doing and run to help us."
And this is the entire point - you give what help you can, because someday YOU might need help.
It's pretty much enshrined in maritime law, but this attitude existed long before those laws.

An obstacle in convincing people that LLMs writing history or any nonfiction is a bad thing is that there’s a widespread misperception that history is just a collection of facts on a page. This predates bots; I remember suffering through some techbro telling me historians were obsolete in 2011. But the transition to treating everything as “content” has taken away the idea that there’s intent or argumentation behind it. It’s all become value-neutral, which is yet another reason we’re seeing the collapse of critical thinking skills.

Every politician advocating for these oil fields is accepting responsibility for these deaths by ecocide.

BBC out shilling for the anti-demonstration, anti-protest government again this morning.

Apparently it cost taxpayers £150K to remove Banksy works from public buildings.

A few things spring to mind:

1) The street value of these works would have far eclipsed the cost of removing them.

2) Banksy is recognised enough now to argue removing his vandalism is vandalism in its self.

3) Funny how it's our money now, but not when it being used to aid genocide.

Yeah I know. It's a hard pill to swallow. I spent most of my career thinking there were a few bad apples. I wasn't willing to admit the whole barrel was spoiled.

If we want to “fix software” we can't merely critique tools. Because ultimately our challenge is cultural in nature. *And real solutions lie in the humanities.*

I've been a Linux user for more than 30 years. And out of those 30 years, I've been running Debian for the past 20. But since their decision to use AI or not is still "up in the air", I've been testing distributions that are vocally against AI usage, just in case I have to make the switch. For the past week, I've been running @elementary on an extra desktop. And yes, before any of you reply, all Linux distributions are now tainted by the Linux kernel (thanks, Torvalds), but the elementary team have been vocally against any other AI usage and I really respect this. Anyway, I've been using it for a week or so and it's very stable, absolutely beautiful, and is backed by a wonderful team. 5/5 stars.

I recently launched the Libreboot X280 on https://minifree.org/

Libreboot is a free/opensource BIOS/UEFI firmware replacement, based on coreboot. It provides far greater security and customisation compared to proprietary firmware, and I am the founder of this project; sales fund the Libreboot project.

Libreboot gives you back control. It's the same argument as using, say, Linux instead of Windows. I ship Debian Linux by default, with full driver support; you can request another distro or a BSD if you wish.

This goes alongside other existing ThinkPads that I sell, such as the T480 and T580, both higher-end than the X280. The X280 is sold as a much more lightweight, budget-friendly option, at 12.5" (T480 is 14" and T580 is 15.6")

Libreboot removes or disables a lot of nasty malware present in other firmware, such as the Intel Management Engine. Security-conscious users will especially appreciate these. Beyond that, they're also user-friendly and high quality.
