A useful thing to remember if you ever need to call an ambulance for a potentially life-threatening emergency, especially if you're alone: After you call 911, UNLOCK YOUR FRONT DOOR SO THEY CAN REACH YOU QUICKLY. If they have to do a forced entry, that will cost precious minutes, possibly more if the fire department isn't already there.

Honestly my first thought reading this morning’s headline was “Whoa, they used the wrong senator’s name! How embarrassing. Some editor is going to get fired for this.”

This keeps being relevant lately: The rules for replacing a US senator who dies, resigns, or is expelled mid-term are state specific. For Graham's seat, the SC governor will appoint a replacement to serve the rest of his term, which ends this year.

Wrinkle: there will still be a special election. Graham was standing for re-election and had already won the primary, so SC will hold a special primary to replace him on the ballot ahead of the November election.

The state-specific nature of filling senate vacancies is codified in the 17th Amendment, which is confusingly full of wiggle room. Governors must call a special election to fill a seat, but a state legislature can empower a governor to make a "temporary" appointment before that happens. And there's no (federal) constitutional deadline for holding the special election (though that may be specified in state law).

Everything else aside, if the CEO of a major company (but still a tiny fraction of the size of the US government) was visibly spending half his time fretting about refurbishing the fountain in front of corporate headquarters, the stock would tank and the board would fire them.

Once again I remain equal parts impressed and embarrassed that the freaking BRITISH ROYAL FAMILY is doing a better job cleaning house than we are.

One of the fun things about Mastodon is how if you post an observation (especially about politics) you immediately find out how stupid and obvious and naive you were to have assumed that everyone didn’t know that already.

I'm worried that when it's done, we'll find out that it's actually a "ballroom" of the kind found at Ikea or Chuck E Cheese.

Also, fun fact, while zoom lenses today are very commonly used as a convenient alternative to multiple lenses in still photography, they were mostly developed for cinema, where "zooming" during a shot is an effect that can't be achieved without the ability to vary the focal length on the fly.

Anyone raising money to sue for a "recount" of the 2024 presidential election is trying to scam you. This is simply not a thing. The election is long over, and the time during which recounts can happen in every US jurisdiction is long past.
