You're right, that's why I mentioned "the movement". We need collective strategies for sure.

As someone who is gradually migrating towards open horizons, it's difficult to put into words how demoralizing it is to see "the old pros" decamping for BSD. The applications I need Linux for have taken decades to mature on the platform, and won't be serviced by BSD anytime soon.

Yes, people individually need things that work for them now. But BSD won't be a refuge for many, or for long; and suggestion here that this points to the suspicion that FOSS is a movement of selfish engineering that tells itself it's egalitarian.

Those with the privilege of technical aptitude can jump to an even more esoteric and obtuse alternative. But if we really think that Linux/FOSS is an escape hatch from big tech for everyone, there's a question of responsibility here.

You asked for specifics, I don't necessarily have any. It needs to be a collective effort. Blowing the horn like you guys are doing is an important start

@ophiocephalic thank you for putting it in words. I think it would be sensible to say why I chose NetBSD over staying with Linux: I need a way forward. If the whole tech world decides to ensloppify Linux even further, there's little I can do to resist, the tech stack of most things that can be called a "desktop Linux distribution" is too complex. NetBSD, on the other hand? I can actually imagine forking it and maintaining it on a human scale. Not in the least because it has been done, multiple times, so I have confidence that if I'm healthy and have free time, I'll be able to keep my computer working with NetBSD&descendants, even if the whole IT world succumbs to slop. Obviously it won't be, it can't be a solution that works for everyone. But I can see it working. I can't see it with Linux, I had hope about it a year ago, but I started to accept that we're moving from the prosperous era of computing into the lands of collapse computing and computer scavenging. I hope I'm wrong

Appreciate this perspective, and also found your recent posts on migrating informative. I absolutely don't mean to point a finger at anyone for doing what they individually need to.

Your account speaks to the bigger problem - we're all facing the crisis as individuals, in a moment when collective action is desperately needed. It's become a cliche but it's true - the basic problem isn't technological, it's social. The tech solutions need to flow out of the social organization, rather than the opposite
