This is a long shot, but: does anyone have access to a Supermicro H11DST-B *version 2.x* motherboard?

We (@hswaw) suspect that the only important difference with 1.x is a larger NOR flash for the firmware. If so, a little hot air action would allow an upgrade to Zen 2 CPUs, and get big perf/power-efficiency gains on a budget.

    Boosts much appreciated!

For some context: @hswaw is a volunteer-ran non-profit community of tinkerers. This Supermicro is our best gear, and it supports not just our services, but those of 3 other hackerspaces. And soon, it will support @mykoryza -- a non-profit that aims to host web services (such as Fediverse) for the public.

If that's something you'd like to support, you can :)

a 2U supermicro blade server - with four nodes (2x EPYC 7001 series CPU, 128GB of DDR4). Above it, an experimental multi-node SAS hard drive chassis made by yours truly. Lots of cables.

@radex @hswaw @mykoryza wait, so the idea is to dump the firmware from a 2.x motherboard, to be able to upgrade 1.x to 2.x? (I'm a bit confused as to what the call to action is here. granted, i don't have any such mobo on hand, but...)

@mei @mykoryza @hswaw we have v1 mobo that only supports Zen 1 EPYCs. v2 supports Zen 2. We can download v2 firmware and we know it does not fit in 16MB. We also know v2 has 32MB Flash chip. We suspect that soldering a larger chip for the newer firmware to fit might be enough for Zen2 to work. But it’s risky to YOLO it. Being able to carefully compare the two revisions side by side could tell us if there are other significant differences.

@radex @hswaw I don't have that exact board but on my H11 SM added support for Rome with the version 2.

@radex @hswaw I will check tomorrow. UPDATE: No luck.
But honestly give it a try. The soldering is not too hard and it would be an awesome hack.

@Bobo_PK @hswaw Thanks for checking. I've been going over the internet for high-res pics of other H11 series motherboards since yesterday and I'm becoming more and more convinced that the flash chip really is the only difference. (But I haven't found a side by side comparison high res enough to check all ICs).

The fact that "v2.0" seems to be a sticker on all of them is a dead giveaway that there were no layout changes since last v1.x revision

@Bobo_PK @hswaw Also, amazingly, it seems like in v1.x, the Flash chip is *socketed*, so it's possible it might not even require soldering!

(There's another, soldered, 8Mbit Winbond chip on the board. I assume it's BMC firmware and not changed between revisions, but I was not able to confirm yet)

@radex @hswaw they can all be dumped with a flasher. We some times fix faulty super micro boards by reflashing a broken bios.
@Exellent has fixed cursed states a dozen times.
