@mcc "noreply@anthropic.com" - that takes some fucking brass.

And they're talking about dropping the attribution requirement for the kernel.

"Computer" is `cat /dev/urandom | bash` and nothing else, forever

Additionally the "fix" fixes more than 40 separate issues in a single mega-commit touching 68 files which like. This is really beyond "you are trusting the slop machine too much". This is "the moment the slop machine got in your hands, a switch flipped in your head and you were like 'I never have to follow any engineering standards, any at all, ever again'". To repeat once again: "AI" is not a technology, it is a permission structure

- Someone named jdelgadoalfonso did a PR on Nim titled "fixes a batch of the oldest open bugs"

- It fixed a bug I filed in Jun 2016. LOL, good for Nim!

- I look at the commit

- "Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>"

- Wow! Fuck Nim!

Anyway, read "Fine Structure" (qntm, 2021)

@mcc furby organ guy in the hague

Invented a soul detector. Pointed it at Claude. Nothing. Checkmate, sloptivists! While trying to put the soul detector away accidentally pointed it at the furby on the shelf. Steady, strong signal. O shit

It just RANDOMLY turns out that the Texas Instruments SN69438P chip, used in the Furby's pseudo-"speech synthesis", houses a soul. Nobody noticed until now because nobody looked

What if, in some kind of cosmic mind-blowing coincidence, it turned out that LLMs are not conscious, but Furbies ARE conscious and were conscious all along

@mcc bad news: it's computers _all_ the way down

Falling out of the computer tree and hitting every computer on the way down

Furthermore, it appears that in addition to the two tutorials I mention above, the ones linked from the regular Idris website, there is a third, secret tutorial, and this one explains how to actually execute a piece of code, explains why readline isn't working right in the idris2 repl, etc. https://codeberg.org/jjl/tutorials/src/branch/main/00-setup.md

I guess I can move on now. Hopefully there aren't more nasty surprises lurking in my toml configuration file (presumably lying in wait to blow up if I attempt to configure an LSP).

After some poking, it turns out that installing Idris2 in Racket mode, then uninstalling with the given instructions, then re-installing in Chez mode, leaves the system in an inconsistent state where it sometimes uses Racket and sometimes doesn't work at all. I need to stress I have various community members and maintainers in my mentions trying to help me and they're being very nice. They give me hand-surgery to perform on a TOML file. It ixes it. Compiling takes 1.4s instead of over 2 minutes.

So after a brief conversation with Idris2 maintainers

- Idris can run on top of either "Racket" or "Chez". I went with Racket because I thought it was the fast one. This is no longer true. The maintainers expect Chez to be a little faster. In fact it's hundreds of times faster. This surprises the maintainers.

- Additionally, in Debian, Chez takes up 10% the disk space of Racket.

After what I'd consider a somewhat unfriendly uninstall procedure, I re-install idris2, atop Chez.

It doesn't work

We now note that that we do not waive our attribution requirements for Spritely Goblins, which are present in Apache v2 (and for that matter, CC BY, CC BY-SA, and most FOSS licenses) https://codeberg.org/spritely/goblins/pulls/998/files

So if you train on our codebase, you have to retain attribution, which we consider the most important requirement to motivate development of technology in the commons.

If, somehow, you are using a statistical soup which has no way to preserve attribution, well, we don't permit or approve of dropping such a requirement, and actually, the licenses we use never have.

A "programming language" is a computer program that creates a multi-gigabyte folder somewhere inside ~/.local and never tells you about it

@mcc average Mastodon user mentioned in ACARS 1000 times per year factoid actually statistical error. mcc Andi, who lives in the frosted north...

This is NOT my fault do NOT put this on me

I was trying to figure out why Idris can run on Chez Scheme and Racket Scheme but not Guile Scheme but the Guile webpage says it implements Scheme R5 and "most of" scheme R6 so maybe that's it

Got a reply to the poll bringing up Thomas Nagel's "you can't know what it feels like to be a bat" thought experiment, and I was like well I don't think it's so hard, wouldn't being a bat just be like when you listen to music and the music has a shape? But then I remembered probably most people don't experience music as a series of three-dimensional volumes. Y'all can't even taste words can you

Anyway, point is, people think understanding bats is hard but other people is easy. And they're wrong
