I have opted in to organ donation in the German medical system! It was shockingly straightforward. Is a living will equally straightforward? I have one in the US but I'd rather set it up whatever way is standard and part of my electronic health record here.
Nothing has prepared me for why the conjugation of anfangen involves putting an at the opposite end of the sentence. That will take me a very long time to master.
Paying attention to what mistakes German speakers consistently make in English is highly instructive as to how the equivalent constructions will be unintuitive to me in German. One that I've noticed across multiple languages is whether to make one or both verbs past tense or conditional in compound constructions, e.g.
"Didn't you went there yesterday?"
"I thought that will be helpful"
"I didn't know that will bother you"
These all tell me what the natural construction would be in the speaker's native language. I am always excited to notice such things.
which scifi author just had or is having a new book out right about now? I saw mention of it on here but I lost it and now I don't know what I'm even looking for!
EDIT: solved, it's Becky Chambers' "As You Wake, Break the Shell" which is supposed to come out today
I really want to know which bacteria I'm fighting off. Knowing the antibiotic is working and which bacteria it affects narrows it down a little but not nearly enough. I'd like to culture them but cannot possibly justify it.
Anybody on here who works with LabVIEW? What the fuck is the difference between a reference, a local variable, and a property node associated to the value of the control?
I have a sinus infection absolutely kicking my butt. It's mostly migrated to the throat now thanks to effective otcs, but I'm exhausted, intermittently nauseous and dizzy, and miserable.
my sinuses are fucked and the inside of my head feels so strange. every time I blow my nose the pressure change makes me so nauseous I have to lie down for a bit, and my ears feel underwater. arglbargl.
Ah yes, now I remember why I dropped Typst the last time I picked it up. When you go to start the presentation, it says that's only available with a Pro subscription (creating the presentation is free).
I can download a PDF without paying anything, but still. Dark patterns. I avoid businesses that pull these kinds of things.
I hate preparing talks, but I've realized I hate it less when slide prep involves writing my own functions for how I want things formatted and then knowing they will be applied uniformly. Typst has some flaws -- it says it's all markdown, but in practice it's closer to LaTeX than it will admit, but it's also not quite LaTeX, so there are also things you can't do.... still. This addresses my greatest pain points with Powerpoint and LibreOffice. I will probably either stick with Typst or move to LaTeX when I hit its limits.
A window into my brain: every time I have "Royals" going through my head unbidden, my brain substitues some other verb in the line "we're driving Cadillacs in our dreams", and then it does a double take a moment later and tries to reconstruct an image of what it just sung me. So far we've gotten:
Never bored here.
uhhh Hamburg people, what does the siren mean that just happened?
Apparently one of the Star Trek engineers got his remains smuggled onboard the ISS? I did not have any plans for mine, but NOW I DO.
Okay technically there were preliminary steps: organs to living people if possible, body to science if they want it, maybe I can be a practice cadaver if nothing else. But after that. SPACE. Pull some mineral out of me and bake me into a piece of electronics. That would be the coolest thing ever.
fedi, I have been tasked with designing and building a button array for my niblings (3 year old twins). 🤩
The idea is they can press buttons and the device will play the matching song. The buttons will need to be individually identifiable, and it would be ideal to incorporate the kids' favorite colors and animals. Everything needs to be kid-safe and as sturdy as possible.
I am thinking of 3D printing keycaps and using standard (preferably robust) keyboard keys on a macropad, attaching a microcontroller in protective housing, and adding LEDs and probably silicone bumpers. Maybe a handle too? It'll need a small speaker and a rechargeable battery, and a USB port for charging and for uploading songs, though that can probably be the existing one on the microcontroller. I should probably add a volume knob.
Any tips or suggestions?
Sundays are for getting up for a bit and then going back to bed three separate times.
I'm really struggling to find or make anything resembling salsa in Germany. I can find some "taco sauce" and similar in the international aisle at the supermarket, but nothing I actually want to cook with. I might have to go on an "ingredient vacation" and collect some peppers and sauces from other countries.
Friends, anybody got a favorite program that supports drawing directly on slides with a stylus — not in the sense of annotating slides during a talk, but in the sense of preparing diagrams for them?
I would strongly prefer the result is something vectorized and editable. It's okay if it smooths, but if it "corrects" a loose, open oval to a perfect, closed oval (for example) and can't be overridden, that won't work.
Must run on Linux and/or Mac, preferably both. I could work with something that ran in-browser only, as long as I can export to a standard format for presentations and PDF.
Encountered an alt-text that basically just said a colored map. Not what the colors meant, not what was colored. Only this time, the rest of the post and image also didn't say enough to interpret the colors, so I guess technically the alt text was as complete as the image? They just failed to convey any info to anyone.
my thermostat is branded "oventrop" and I can only ever read it as "too much oven"
Thinking about that time during a port between GPU architectures that some array took up a different amount of space (? I don't remember exactly) and long story short instead of simulating diffraction on a detector roughly 10cm x 10cm, we simulated it for a detector the size of Germany. It ran out of memory.
