In a world where the biggest companies in the world are getting away with not even respecting the most basic copyright license requirement of attribution, imagine thinking that the solution is a new copyright license.
Making a safe space for people who refuse bullshit generators means no tolerance in the space for usage of bullshit generators. No means no, no exceptions.
When they posted their Hot Take About AI (https://sfconservancy.org/llm-gen-ai/llm-backed-generative-ai-recommendations.html), I thought it was misguided but didn't really have the bandwidth to care. But after seeing bkuhn harass someone over criticism, I'm disgusted with the organization.

What a great testimony by Richard Denniss, co-CEO of the Australia Institute, before the Australian Parliament about the social and economic consequence of acquiescing to the demands of the #AI industry in #Australia.
(Sorry but I can’t find a better quality video than this one)

Here’s another good article on the #subprime problem facing US car loans today.
Car owners are increasingly underwater (i.e. they owe more on their car than the car is worth). As a result, some people are driving their cars longer (not bad), but some are rolling their debt over into new debt as they buy newer cars and extending their loan terms to manage their monthly payments (very bad).
In 2026, more than 30% of issued car loans are MORE THAN TWELVE YEARS LONG. This is clearly unsustainable. Do these loans even have a chance of outpacing a car’s depreciation? Even comprehensive insurance won’t cover the outstanding balance of the loan if the car were totaled.
This is heading into very bad territory.

What we're seeing in LOSS (Libertarian Open Source Software) is that we built an empire on that luck, which seems impossible until you realize all the survivor's bias. Most projects were useful only to the author, or nobody at all. But there were so goddamned many of them, the barrier to entry was so low, that some of them happened to be aligned with other people, and then you end up with projects becoming popular, and eventually critical infrastructure, where the duty of care downstream is given belated importance by someone who never fostered it as a skill, and who is also worn down by a vocal minority of users bringing their entitlement to the ticket tracker.
And it all feels so different than making a cool tool for your mom, right?

@ludicity @drahardja @imclaren the bubble will IMO pop when two conditions are satisfied: 1) capital influx stops (either when the ROI is unmistakably shown to be miserable if not negative or more likely when capital simply runs out, which seems to be the case now as interest rates and bond yields increase significantly) and 2) when one major player (likely a compute provider) belly flops into bankruptcy, triggering a sell-off and the collapse of the whole edifice (and a big recession alas).
@drahardja this is a great, straightforward, and thorough resource and it’s appeared on my feed at the perfect time for my personal life.
I’m not really sure where it might fit in, and I want to caveat that *I am not Aboriginal Australian*, but I work for an Aboriginal interest group and something I’ve noticed even within our own workplace is that some of my colleagues are alarmingly comfortable uploading culturally sensitive information — including things classed as “secret and sacred” — to chat models. There’s a real lack of awareness about what it really means to give information to these models as an end user — everyone seems to think that what you give it on your end is safe.
There’s also a trend here in Australia of AI generated videos pretending to show Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and elders sharing knowledge about their culture, Country, and wildlife — but it’s all made up from synthesised information across a wide array of cultural groups, and frequently wrong.
I can’t speak on behalf of Aboriginal people and condemn it — it’s not my place to do so. But I can say I’ve noticed both these trends and I find it concerning.
@drahardja Oh, absolutely. The other part of this is that you can use your inflated share prices to purchase other companies using pure stock swaps--i.e., no cash--which again, only works as long as everyone believes in infinite growth.
@drahardja as you noted in the quoted thread, stock buybacks are a significant part of the problem. Companies are doing them in part to substitute for pay (so they’re essentially, indirectly, buying employee-granted shares), partly to manipulate their share price so investors can sell at a profit, and partly to let large investors make number go up without having the tax consequences that dividends have.
We really need to redo a bunch of security law, tbh. It’s gotten bad.
it’s all fun and games until the slop gets to SCADA and other industrial systems.
slopped CNC and laser curring software is absolutely terrifying frankly. I may never update our CNC routers or lasers ever again just to be safe. this should sound like an absurd plan and yet. and yet.

Still thinking about this. It’s hard to see the stock market as anything but pure speculation and (self-dealing, scorched-earth) casino at this point, because almost all of the perceived value of a stock is now associated with its share price, not its dividend.
Because dividends are dead, share prices MUST go up for investors to make money. For share prices to go up, a company must grow its business, forever. Growth (and more importantly POTENTIAL growth), not profitability, becomes the primary concern.
Contrast this with dividends, which yield a return on investment *without having to grow the business*. A mature business with a flat share price but yielding a 6% dividend returns the same money to the investor as a zero-dividend business growing its share prices by 6% per year, but the former is under no pressure to continually expand.
