I have very strong opinions about unix ( Linux, and especially Redhat, isn't unix anymore. Just listen to Lennart. )

And no I will NOT back down. This is a holy war, one I enlisted in long ago. Promoted to officer, probably.

I will not back down.

It really wasn't rocket science to call this one.

I'd rather eat another ten hour outage bridge on a Friday evening with no sleep because a datacenter's power distribution panel caught fire than do another daily standup. Fuck "Scrum" and/or "Agile."

( Yes that electrical fire is an actual incident I worked through back in 2016. )

A post got out of hand and expanded into a Blog entry.

TL;DR: something is wrecking the web from underneath. People blame these scrapers on AI but I no longer think they are related.

Dude leading this bike ride ride screamed "HEY IT'S MIDNIGHT!" and held up his phone showing four zeros

Which reminded me that PostgreSQL accepts "allballs" as a valid time meaning Midnight.

Still giggling.

Using an LLM for a hobby project is baffling to me.

"In did in three days what normally takes weeks!"  Uh, why does that matter?

"With this new Anthropic footware I hiked the entire Appalachian Trail in three days!"

Dude you missed it. Not just the trail itself because you you went so fast you didn't see any detail - you missed the entire point of hiking it.

So Linus showed his entire ass ( again, if you've been paying attention in the last twenty years, but for some reason this one really got noticed ), and now I keep seeing people talking about building weird #NetBSD / Debian hybrids, how Devuan was trying that, and

You know you can just run NetBSD right? No need to loot it for replacement parts, it's a stable modern OS that works fine exactly as it is.

Putting the GNU userland on top of it will be a lot of work to catch up with what it already is, and carries the reward of having Richard Stallman's slime on everything.

I think a particularly bad early mistake of the web, as it exists now, was a category error.

HTTP and HTML were designed to move and display documents. It still does a pretty good job of that, too - when someone points out a well built website, it's typically a small library. Little books of text or images or audio, everything is stateless.

But people didn't want the web to be a library. They wanted to distribute applications. Javascript was born and slowly sent us all to hell.

I don't care which search engine you use, because, there are only three:

- Google ( which is problematic )
- Bing ( aka Microsoft, which is  problematic )
- Yandex ( Which is problematic )

There are others that aren't those, but explicitly state they don't crawl the entire internet .

If you have an exception to the above, please reply. I would LOVE to be proven wrong ... but odds are, I'll to upset you with the truth.

Caught in a mental loop wondering about the Linux "ip" command - specifically, why. It was a solved problem, and someone spent time to rewrite everything. I recall hearing something about the old tools being old and icky and no one wanting to maintain them anymore, so they made something that reminds me of the worst parts of a Cisco CLI.

I bet in fifteen, twenty years when the maintainers have turned over again they'll make an entirely new tool that does the same thing, again. Probably something embedded in systemd that requires privilege escalation to just look at a list of interfaces. At that point Wayland still won't have a functional screenreader, but that won't be considered a problem because it's been deprecated in favor of systemd-framebuffer which also doesn't have a functional screenreader. systemd will have also dropped support for 32 bit CPUs as well because no one wanted to implement a 32 bit systemd-ld_so - they were too busy getting the vibecoded systemd-chromium web browser to work with IPv6, without success.

Meanwhile BSD will still be using ifconfig because they never tried to fix a thing that wasn't broken.

Haven't laughed this hard in a long time.

"Some customers may have experienced unscheduled collaborative compute with external parties. Under the terms of /tmp/TREATY.md, customers whose workloads ran on odd-numbered hosts were contractually protected from exfiltration, a fact General Counsel has asked us to stop describing as “a silver lining.” "

Back to the Z80: I've plenty of wildly obsolete devices I can use to view the schematic of my custom enhancement of a wildly obsolete computer I intend to build with even more wildly obsolete construction methods.

Like my HP Envizex X Terminal.

Hmmm let's check the flow control on the terminal server perhaps.

Oh dear, something is very wrong. My schematic is bad but not nearly _this_ bad

This schematic looks like ass - I'm out of practice - but here we go: #RC2014 single stepper unit.

Interested in Redmine[1], has a lot of modules I find directly useful - repo browser that supports Subversion, Issue Tracker, and Wiki specifically. Seems to be actively developed and supported and has up to date packages in pkgsrc, a huge plus.

It's Ruby though. After hearing the drama about Ruby Central/Bundler, as well as DHH in particular, I don't want to take the time to deploy something and discover it's affiliated with people I want to avoid.

So Lazyweb: is Redmine safe / unaffilated from all that mess?

Deep in the datasheets of old obsolete TTL chips, I discovered people once taught semiconductors to dream.

I like this model. Have you been dreaming? What has the imaginary processor in your head been computing lately? Where is the output data going?

Just remembered I do, in fact, own an HP X-Terminal.

.... I should make that thing run again. That'll be a good hyperfocus, and then I'll have a way to read semiconductor datasheets on my work bench, as well as pulling up web pages, control mpd, etc...

I miss having an electronic salvage type store near me. Something like Ax-Man Surplus in Minneapolis/Saint Paul.

I used to make routine trips to Dayton as a place there, Mendelson's Liquidation Outlet, was amazing. I'd spend hours just wandering the third floor, down the rows of obsolete electronics, looking for weird stuff. An entire room of vacuum tubes. Heavenly.

TL;DR: I feel like scrapping something to get parts to build a thing. I won't know what until I see it.

Occurs to me that people watching LLMs with anticipation thinking artificial general intelligence is just around the corner are pretty much horny teenagers watching the scramble porn.

You think you see something, huh.
