"A TRANS WOMAN FROM MIAMI WAS SENT TO A COUNTRY SHE'D NEVER SEEN
DEPORTED
WHO: MEET DANIELA
Daniela Fuentes, 32, came to the US from Cuba. In Miami she worked as a hairstylist and a drag performer, and she lived openly as herself.
WHAT HAPPENED: ONE MISSED COURT DATE
Her asylum case was in Texas. She asked to move it to Florida and says she never heard back. She missed the Texas date, and ICE picked her up.
WHERE THEY SENT HER: NOT CUBA
August 29 she was deported to the Central African Republic. She had never been there, knows no one, and doesn't speak the language.
WHERE SHE IS NOW: A ROOM SHARED WITH FOUR MEN
She lives in a government compound in Bangui. She has no ID, can't legally work, and rarely leaves the room.
IN HER WORDS: BACK IN THE CLOSET
'Everything is difficult here because I have to hide who I am.' (Daniela Fuentes)
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT: SHE WANTS SOMEWHERE SAFE
Cuba has said she can come back. She is hoping to seek asylum somewhere else instead, possibly Canada.
WHY IT MATTERS: DON'T LET HER STORY DISAPPEAR
Queer immigrants are our people too. Share this so she isn't hidden twice."
