Once I was driving through the Netherlands with a colleague. We had the radio on for music. At some point there came news and we started talking about it. It took us a couple of minutes to realise we had just listened to Dutch news and obviously understood enough of it. I don't understand people talking Dutch "normally", however.
I'm from northern Germany, the influences of Low-German probably help.
