@Remittancegirl It looks like a hedge above a garden wall.
I'll hazard some horticulture and go as far as a *box* hedge - the spotty texture resembles little sub-circular leaves.
(I had a neighbour with a Leylandia hedge once. I approve of earthenware hedges.)
