EA has announced #WingCommander III: 30th Anniversary Edition!
The original FMV tapes have been recovered and are being restored, meaning the game's star-studded cutscenes (featuring Mark Hamill!) can finally be seen without the heavily compressed 240p video of 1994
There's also support for up to 60fps and improvements made with the fan community. #PCgaming preservation wins again :)
Oct 12, 2026, 9:24 PM@flwwhtrbt I was sucker for FMV games back in the day. My first DVD drive was the Creative Labs DXR2 DVD kit which also came with an MPEG2 decoder board.
One of the included games was Wing Commander 4 (I think) so all the cut scenes were full DVD quality.
Quite impressive for the time.
@flwwhtrbt This is such good news, thank you for sharing it. I ADORED Wing Commander III & IV - played them on my 3DO back in the day. Mainly because I didn't have much ELSE to play on it, but I digress...
I revisited WCIV via eXoDOS earlier this summer and those FMVs were TOUGH to get through. Having them without that early 90s compression will rock.
I love that it is being done 𝘰𝘧𝘧𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺. So many of these older cinematic sequences get 're-done' but it ends up being some shifty A.I. effort.
So fingers crossed this will come out with more quality and done as it should be!
