To program efficiently, I often need to find a clear conceptual idea in my head how to proceed and then see it fail in the real code to find the right way forward.

Writing code on paper can sometimes allow skipping the second step when I then go to the computer, but only when I really know the whole project by heart or work on a strictly delimited task.
