I'm also a big fan of the line, "You can't see yourself in the mirror with your eyes closed"
TMBG are quite possibly unacknowledged Zen Masters.

The lecturer in this video series keeps pronouncing "doctrinal" with a long "I" and it's making me want to shiv them (figuratively).
If they pronounced doctrine as "DAWK TRINE" I'd at least appreciate their consistency.
Are there better things to be upset about? Absolutely.
Moments like this get "Someone Keeps Moving My Chair" by They Might Be Giants stuck in my head. "And Mr. Horrible says, `I don't mind, the thing that bothers me is SOMEONE KEEPS MOVING MY CHAIR'"
Another time at a coffee shop the barista mentioned one of my favorite local acts would be playing there later that week. "I'll be there with bells on."
"Why would you do that?"
"Huh?"
"Why are you wearing bells to a music performance?"
This thought comes with the memory of talking with my kid about a show they liked and I said we'd have to tape it.
"Why? Is it broken?"
"No it's... It means 'to record' it."
"But why tape?"
(Cue one drawn out discussion about the 80s-00s later...)
Raise your hand if you know where the phrase "pulling out all the stops" for going all in (and loud) comes from without searching.
LOAD "ESCHATON",8,1
I'll repeat it again and loudly for the people in the back of the room: just because someone doesn't know what you're outraged about and asks for sources so they can form their own opinion doesn't necessarily mean they're acting in bad faith. It is 2026. The Internet is full of disinformation and other people acting in bad faith. Search engines deliver increasingly bad results that are full of slop.
Giving help to someone who asks for context and sources is a kindness. Name calling and sarcasm, even if they are acting in bad faith, is not the way.
And... blocking folks who are asking you to be polite is never a good look.
I'm looking for a simple explanation of why, as people are looking to get away from Linux, FreeBSD seems to be getting passed over. I have a vague recollection that someone took issue with someone working on Xorg. Maybe it's echos of the wireguard disaster.
I like the other BSDs, I just wonder why I'm not hearing more about Free. OpenBSD proved a bit wonky on my T450S and I don't have it in me to fight with NetBSD and the wireless.
Thanks in advance for input. Please don't make me regret asking. I'm not looking for low quantity hot takes or shitposts.
Also interesting to note that I am seeing a web of verification links they are using, which are just pointers to other instances.
Two of them, opentoot.org and gaza-verified.org both use the same registrar. The .ca instance uses a different registrar.
Although there is a chance that this all my be legitimate, getting an unsolicited message with a donation request is spammy no matter what.
Head's up: getting spam from opentoot.org, an instance with 8 users and an entirely sus presentation. No about entry, no serrver rules entry, empty staff/admin profile.
I will be blocking this domain and suggest you do the same.
argh... paid only content. fufufu... well, suffice to say, amazon is doing exactly what you'd expect if you set your expectations appropriately low.
so like, I can't check out a digital book at my local library because there's dumb license restrictions
and I can't check out a physical copy of the book because they can only get so many copies
but Amazon can hoover up and destroy books to feed an AI?
@vga256 we played this as a fun break while getting training at a call center in 1995. We were getting hyped about this new operating system coming out that year.
The other distributing thing about the success of Linux is that people now think of open source as this magical wishing well where loud complaints turn into features and fixes.
Look at the board of the Linux foundation. There was a time where Microsoft was one of the largest contributors to the kernel.
Linux has the power of big tech, with an industry built around it and dependant on it. Linux, like the PC clone, slipped through a crack that the industry has been closing for the last 4 decades.
Linux has tons of paid development because it runs the Internet by and large. Your favorite open source project does not have the might of big tech behind it.
Bear this in mind before you go on a rant about how people aren't trying hard enough to make the software you want to see work.
It bothers me that people forget that Linux's success had significant help from a combination of external events:
Now look at the state of getting an "Open Source" phone. I'm reminded of internal memos that came out where Bill Gates was wanted to lock open source out of ACPI: https://www.osnews.com/story/17689/bill-gates-on-making-acpi-not-work-with-linux/
Big tech has a vested interest in keeping their stuff closed off and beyond the skills and time available to volunteers.
Edit: grammar and spelling. That's the NoAI difference :parrot:
I'd like to get this rather quickly since I ordered this kit over a month ago, and have had to buy other replacements for incorrect parts for it out of pocket.
I realize this is someone's hobby, so I'm trying to not be a dick about it, but this has been a royal pain in my ass.
And, in case anyone asks, I will not say who the seller of the kit is even though this is starting to look like a pattern.
I'd almost use the #rc2014 programmer (https://z80kits.com/shop/39sf040-programmer-rom-writer-for-romwbw/) but it seems geared towards users of that platform.
Thanks in advance.
Can anyone out there please recommend a good 39SF040 EEPROM programmer / universal EEPROM programmer that is either mac or linux compatible?
I have a kit that was sent to me with a bad EEPROM. It's been two weeks since the problem was discovered and I just found out the seller still hasn't shipped me the replacement.
Behold, what is in my opinion, the best mod file ever:

It's freakin' epic. "How'd they get past the four voice limit with those chords?" Samples of common intervals. Really well done.
Hey @Wrewdison - found your site researching some mestastic stuff. Your about page has a broken profile link:
<li>Mastodon: <a href="https://masto.hackers.town/Wrewdison">hackers.town</a></li>
Should be:
<li>Mastodon: <a href="https://masto.hackers.town/@Wrewdison">hackers.town</a></li>
Looking for opinions on a #meshtastic device. My local-ish store has a LILYGO T-Deck Plus, without the SMA / internal antenna only. I've heard mixed and unreliable reports of poor reception.
Thoughts? Suggestions?
Scope: looking to buy this, depending on opinions of parks who've actually used the thing.
Boosts appreciated.
