As the LLM & other generative AI advocates get more and more lost and drone-like, they really do seem like they’re going to all start saying, in unison, “Resistance is futile. Your life as it has been is over. From this time forward, you will service us.”
The illegal-hotel-owner meltdowns about AirBnB’s updated rules are delicious. “What do you mean I have to actually clean my illegal hotels between guests?! That might cut into my profit margins!!! Waaaaaaaah!!!!111”
Fuck them and fuck what they did to the housing market. I hope they get foreclosed on.
Completed my fiftieth year on this cruel joke of a world.

Let me take this opportunity to point out that NetBSD refuses tainted code, such as code generated by LLMs.
Hey, John, no matter how ‘happening’ the Nazi bar is, how much ‘action’ is at the Nazi bar, it’s still a Nazi bar and nobody reasonable should go there.
Anthropic is saying that their products present an existential risk to humanity in their IPO prospectus.
With a warning like that, it sounds to me like anyone who participates in promoting or enabling Anthropic or their products is acting as an enemy of the species. What do they think should be done about people who actively work towards humanity’s extinction, I wonder? Wouldn’t that be exactly the sort of thing subject to universal jurisdiction under international law?
I’m so glad that “AI safety,” “rationalism,” and “Effective Altruism” are finally being seen for what they are: Different branches of a doomsday sex cult centered on Eliezer Yudkowsky. Yes, really.
Looks like I’ll be putting away my Daring Fireball and Accidental Tech Podcast shirts for a while. It’s a pity, they were comfy shirts and I thought I was supporting good people with them. https://eschatologist.net/blog/?p=496
It’s really fucking stupid that Apple lets Facebook decide whether I get to use the Instagram and Threads apps on my Mac.
Everyone can clearly see that the Q are the Federation’s descendants, right?
I propose we call the coming period of worldwide civil strife “the Eugenics Wars” because even without Khaaaaaaan! it’s basically eugenics obsessed rich weirdos against everyone else.
Jensen Huang saying “a $500,000/year engineer should have a token spend of $250,000/year” makes me think he’s finally utterly and completely lost the plot.
Once you understand that “fascism” is another word for “autocratic capitalism”—or, as Mussolini himself called it, “corporatism”—you can begin to understand how our world found itself in the absolute mess it’s in today.
And the same goes for the Software Engineering layoffs, which don’t seem to be reported much upon because the layoffs have been described as “Apple Vision Pro, Siri, and software” where perhaps people don’t get that the latter is how Apple refers to the Software Engineering (SWE) org. There are so many bugs that should be fixed, that users encounter in their everyday lives, just reassign people to work on them. It’s stupid to lay people off when they could do that.
And laying off anyone working on Siri right now—at what I suspect will be the height of the current AI bubble—also signals that the company’s not serious about something that the entire rest of the market is utterly giddy over. While I think the people who are giddy over it are dupes, stupid, or both, it’s somewhere between a Bad Look and an Own Goal to openly flout a market trend without exceptionally good reason. Once again, there are plenty of bugs these folks could be asked to work on.
It’s so fucking stupid for Apple to lay *anyone* off right now. Laying off anyone working on anything related to Apple Vision Pro is a gross strategic blunder, because it signals a lack of confidence in the product. Put them to work fixing bug backlogs if you don’t want them working on what they were doing, but don’t lay them off and let that show up in the press, that’s fucking amateur hour shit.
Dave Plummer is doing a talk at VCF Montreal? I hope it gets interrupted repeatedly with replicas of his scamware pop-ups.
Supposedly former United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson’s family is going to provide “victim impact statements” to the court now that Lugii Mangione has pled guilty to federal stalking charges.
The court should also hear from people affected by United Healthcare’s claim denials over the years that Brian Thompson was their CEO. After all, they killed SIXTY FUCKING THOUSAND PEOPLE EVERY YEAR FOR PROFIT, seems like there might be a few affected family members that the court needs to hear from.
You know what would be neat? A new, open, VHDL or System Verilog implementation of the 16-, 32-, and 64-bit Transputer architecture.
The best possible thing that could come from the Paramount/Time Warner merger investigations would be not only preventing the merger, but spinning off “Star Trek” into its own entity.
There are so many things related to Star Trek that will be good, reliable money printers while also being opportunities to tell great stories. Paramount doesn’t get that, Time-Warner Discovery doesn’t get that, but fans absolutely do. Just let it be itself already.
