Before the advent of the telephone the word "hello" or "hullo" was not a greeting, but an exclamation of mild surprise, as in "hello, what's this?" I think it's in Alexander Graham Bell's patent application that he suggests that the greeting when answering a telephone should be "ahoy hoy". This is why The Simpsons' Mr Burns answers the phone that way, they're insinuating that he's old enough to have been told that's the way to do it.

If anyone's in the mood for a fun mix of sci-fi and historical fiction in a book series with a female protagonist, I can strongly recommend Jodi Taylor's Chronicles of Saint Mary's starting with "Just One Damned Thing After Another". There's a semi-prequel short story, "The Very First Damned Thing," but you shouldn't read it until after book 4, "A Trail Through Time."
There's currently 14 main books in the series, a handful of shorts, and a spinoff series called The Time Police.

A side-effect of the whole "AI" generation bullshit is people zeroing in on a single word or phraselet and thinking that means it *has* to be "AI" generated. An LLM will use a word or phraselet because it's at least somewhat common in some context (like "little did he know"). It's when it ends up being used *out* of that context that it starts being weird, but even that isn't definitive, it's just one data point.

So, at what age do cats stop accidentally getting their knife fingers stuck on things? It keeps happening to my doofuses and I'm wondering if they're just too young (they're about 6 months old at this point) or if the doof runs deeper.
One of them just tried to climb onto my office chair via the armrest and slipped and fell off which is a somewhat common occurrence so it really could be either.
They call it "hyper awareness" but I just call it being passively aware of what's going on around me and I honestly can't understand how anyone can function *without* that awareness. That sounds to me more like extreme distraction and/or self-absorption. (which isn't a judgement, it's just what it looks like to me)
