I was able to link back to my home county on #40M last night and talk with my friend. I also saw another familiar call on 20M this morning but he wasn't answering the call. #VarAC #amateurradio

#AI doing a pretty good job of decoding #morsecode and filling in missing characters. Copying #KPH out of San Francisco here in Portland, OR.

Contrast that with my newest modem that uses a 32-bit / 64-bit Quad-Core ARM CPU. There's a bit more power under the aluminum in that one.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised that many #amateurradio #TNC and #RTTY MCPs in the 80's used the Z80 processor. My Universal decoders used the higher end Z8800 processor. Interestingly, the top shelf HAL 8000(A) units used mostly analog decoding hardware, but used Z80 for auxiliary display and interface functions.

Listening to the #scanner here in Portland, OR is an entirely different experience than on the US East Coast.

Had a couple on #PSK31 QSO's today. First time in forever. One was a German station I last worked from a ship in 2014, and the other was a relative newcomer. I also managed to have a short chat on a local repeater. I have at least 15 repeaters in range of my station and despite calling on several of them, I only managed one conversation. #amateurradio

Found out the local club has $60,000 in the account due to a couple of big windfalls. Now they want to half of it away to the ARRL to fund a $1,000/yr scholarship in memorial of a former club president. Other club factions want to keep the money and retain control of the gifts. I tend to side with the later. We'll see how that pans out.

Was at the park today on 17M. One guy in FL felt bad no one was answering me and gave me a QSO. The 2nd guy was in Albuquerque and was a real chatterbox. Tried to work my father on Long Island on 40M but no go. Now trying to charge the battery back up. #amateurradio

Wife drops off a used Christmas decoration off on my lap and says "fix it." I plugged it in. The incandescent bulbs look dim. Look at the nearest bulb, it says 12V. Power supply is 5VDC. Plug in my bench power supply at 12V. Lights are good, motor & big bulb not so much. Open it and see a rectifier, do math. Turns out it needs 1300 mA 12VAC. Look on amazon: No such power supply. Thinking cap on: replace 10W halogen bulb with 3W LED so the 1A power supply can carry the full load.

New boat in early October. The captain gave me the green light on a radio. So I hope to bring a kit. This is in Pacific NW US, so W7 land. A new one for me. I'll probably jury rig a key into the ship's station and try to work KPH as well.

There is a lot of love in my house #caturday #catsofmastodon

I have an idea for a maritime themed #clock that doesn't currently exist. The question is if i will get up the motivation to create it.

Well I managed a nice #clover #QSO today on 20M amateur radio. I miss the stucco brrr of Clover II. Unfortunately it has been eclipsed in both utility and UI by #VARA and #VarAC software.

Went to the park today. Seven showed, and five stations were set up. #amateurradio

It is once again #caturday and these 2 are running amok.

Apparently the US distributor thinks there's a 50% tariff on these (my research shows 12.5%) and strongly implied they are unavailable.

I have the irrational desire to own the GHD GN309FA fully-automatic bug key. #amateurradio

Looks like an updated 7100 to me, so should do all the things the 7100 could do with some additions. My 7100 is all mode on all of its bands. The biggest improvement seems to be the dual watch. Sad there is no full duplex for sats. The BT for hands-free headsets is a nice feature, but the WiFi doesn't do much for me.

So there's a new ARQ mode that's actually open source. It's called #Mercury and is a drop in replacement for #VARA. There are only a few videos about it, and not enough OTA tests to see how well it works. I'm wondering if it's worth bothering with. #amateurradio https://github.com/Rhizomatica/mercury/blob/mercuryv2/docs/ARQ.md
