The appropriate ratio of sun and shade is very important

An excerpt from that paper that shows more clearly what the insides of the flower look like.

Instead, I'm just cutting a little window in the material that covers the female part of the flower so i can reach in there with a pollen-covered q-tip.

After i did that, i plugged the hole back up with a chunk of dried material from the same plant.

Let's see if it works

I got the library at work to order me an academic paper on how to pollinate these things, and it turns out, people who are serious about it just cut all of the leafy petal part off of the flower so they can directly transfer pollen from the top section to the bottom section.

I like how these flowers look, so I don't want to do that.

These flowers seem to have evolved an adaptation to prevent self pollination.

There is a gap leading down to the female part of the flower that's big enough for bugs to enter, but it closes up before the male part of the flower starts producing pollen. So, it's a matter of the two halves of the flower being available for mating at different times.

My elephant ear is flowering again, and I want to try and pollinate it.

These flowers are both male and female in one, with the male part being the big piece that looks very male.

The female part is hidden amid the flaps of stuff below the open part of the flower

We're in

It turns on and it's charging now

Transplanting the big pouch battery onto the charge circuitry from the little pouch battery

I was given a new in box Kindle 4 by @mitten yesterday.

It looks like it's been sealed up since 2012, so, predictably, the battery is no good anymore. I could order a replacement battery for $20, but I'm feeling tempted to try hacking another battery into it

More and more news outlets are putting up paywalls, a necessary thing for their survival.

But I work in media relations and we're supposed to keep track of all the places our institution and its researchers appear in the news. It's getting harder and harder to do that.

Our office can't subscribe to all the publications and news outlets out there. Even subscribing to a list of major ones still leaves us unable to see so much coverage about us.

If you live in the LA area and you're on the fediverse (I know there are a few of you), you should come to the next one of these. It's a nice time and fun to see other mastodonners in real life

I finally figured out what this was. I went to open the garage door, and it was unusually heavy.

It's been raining three days, and it's a wood garage door, so i though the door was just waterlogged at first, but no, this was far too heavy to be that.

It turns out one of the springs broke. That's what the big crash and shaking was.

They're going to kill us all to build a beach resort.

You guys have been so patient with me on my glaze journey. I had a real success today, with no caveats.
I pretty much formulated this glaze from scratch - although I had a glaze recipe from Linda Bloomfield as a starting point. But I achieved two important goals for me: a visually interesting low temperature glaze for eathenware, and using only materials easily obtained in Europe - indeed, all produced by Prodesco in Spain. #pottery #glazes #ceramics

What if I made one chocolate-chip scone with vanilla cream-cheese frosting?

I saw a bizarre little play at an experimental theater last night. The show made no sense in a David Lynch-ian sort of way, but it was fun.

This little theater always packs 'em in for its strange offerings, and the audience is always seems to have an average age of like 26.

It's so different than the situation at our community theater, where we only put on the most normal of shows and have an audience that seems to be mostly 80-year-olds who get upset that the children in Matilda are too insolent towards the adults.

This is how we should see these magnificant animals, not hauled up on a boat or in fillets on a slab. We should no more catch or kill this rare and stunning megafauna than we should trap or kill tigers or whales. Here are some more of Rupert’s photos from yesterday, with his kind permission.
